Evaluate The Video Games You Are Playing

There are hundreds of video games on the market today and more are being released onto the market every day. The only problem with these video games is figuring out what games should be played by your children.

Young people are not as concerned with the contents of the video games they are playing as much as adults. That is why adults have such a strong desire to evaluate the video games their youngsters are playing. Many parents try their best to find decent video games for their youngsters to play but there are still questions that unfold in the minds of these parents when their youngsters are playing new games. Parents and adults alike are concerned with how video games that involve killing people or destroying things will effect their children in the future. They are also concerned with video games that have immoral content, illegal content, or contain occult activity. Parents have to protect their children any way they can, especially since there are so many negative influences out there for them already.

There are video games that parents will have no problem with their children playing on their video game system, which would include almost any type of sports video game such as skateboarding, baseball, or football. Video games are actually a way for children, even some adults, to take a step away from reality, but the video games should still install some type of moral values in the children.

As long as the children are not placing the playing of these video games ahead of their other responsibilities, such as school, and if they know the difference between right and wrong, then that is a different matter. The major problem is that few parents are willing to take the time to show their children what is right and what is wrong within some of the video games that they play. Instead, these parents just allow their children to sit in front of their televisions playing what ever video games they choose without any adult supervision what ever.

These video games are highly addicted to children and adults simply because in the game the player is given the ability to control every situation. Many times in the life of an individual they may feel as if their life is simply out of control and the video games allow them to feel as if they are once again in control. This is why so many adults also become addicted to these video games as well as children and another reason why they are so incredibly popular.

In real life, many children and adults find it hard to find respect or to get others to listen to them and they often become overwhelmed with life. However, these video games give them the opportunity to be respected, strong, popular, cool, and even sexy, which they strongly desire to be in real life. This is the result behind so many of these video games becoming so popular with gamers in a variety of age groups. These video games gives gamers the perception of them actually being involved in the game as being a part of the game.

It does seem a shame that these games are being developed and parents feel the need to evaluate them prior to the children participating in them due to so many of them having obscene and immoral content. It seems that the manufactures of video games could produce games that were considered to be more along the lines of family games. These video games would be worth while and would not have such a diverse effect upon children as some of the games being produced now.

The Reasons Why Kids Love Stuffed Animals

There simply must be an answer to why children getting attached to teddy bears or blanket. Actually, there is not just one reason, but there are many reasons. With each different reason is a different child with their own unique story.

The most common reason for this attachment to stuffed animals is the fear of darkness. Little children tend to be afraid of the dark. Therefore, they seek comfort from they’re favorite teddy bear or stuffed bunny. This comfort comes from their sense of friendship the get from this special item. Being young, they may not have that many friends yet. This gives children the chance to imagine that their special item is the best friend ever.

Perhaps the teddy bear that these children hold so dear was given to them by a very special person. For example, a grandmother that has passed away or even just their loving parents going out of their way to make their child happy. That would definitely create some good memories. The certain smell of that item may also bring back some good times. For instance, the stuffed toy that the child is so attached to may smell like that apple pie that Aunt May used to make. This is all described in one word; memories.

The life of a child can be filled with ambiguity and clinging on tightly to a special toy gives them a great amount of security of having something familiar right beside them along the way. Toys give children the opportunity to express themselves imaginatively through the use of role play. They are uncomplaining friends that will never tell the child that it is “much too rainy to play” or “I don’t want to be your friend anymore” and they will be strong against a barrage of conflicting feelings and treatment, thus helping your child build up an emotional awareness of his or her surroundings.

Children have a tendency to outgrow their special toys when they start school. However, for others, even after we have grown to full adulthood, it can still be a comforting thing to take out an old and much loved friend and hold them for a while. There is no harm in a child clinging to a stuffed animal. Just be glad that your child has a sense of security and comfort should they ever feel lonely or scared. That would be a load of your back.

Barbie Dolls VS. Bratz Dolls Controversy

Barbie vs. Bratz is a controversy that seems to grow more and more each day. There are a lot of mixed emotions about both dolls. Well, it may be time for the super slim superwoman of sorts to retire and make room for the new dolls in town. The Bratz are more realistically designed so that each doll is a different shape and size. They aren’t all airbrush material that gives girls idealistic goals of what to live up to.

The question of which doll is better for kids is pretty much up to the parents of the child. There are some things that should be considered when deciding which one to give a small child.

The Bratz dolls are all about fashion and so are the majority of kids nowadays thanks to the media and society. Yes, Barbie was in fashion as well but not as much. The Bratz are more focused on teen fashion. There are some elementary school kids who can give you the fashion news before they can name Barbie’s sister or one thing they did.

Bratz conveys more to the fashion oriented world we’re trapped in. They are regular teenagers that are into all the hottest trends. Kids and teens today want to be with the “in crowd”. The popularity of the Bratz is due in part to trendy clothes that reflect the continuous changes in style.

The fact the Bratz dolls are all different shapes should teach the girls that there’s nothing wrong with being different and that there is no standard they have to live up to in order to please someone else. Those girls are friends no matter what and that is a good lesson for young people to learn. Working out problems instead of giving up on someone or something when times get hard is a good example for kids.

Barbie has a more varied background. She has done almost everything under the sun and is very slim. There are some that will argue that Barbie is to thin and too perfect looking. Barbie dolls help to send out a naive image for girls today. Granted, Barbie seems to have done everything in the world; quite an accomplishment for a plastic doll.

Barbie needs to step aside and let the Bratz dolls take her place. They may not be managing to have ten careers in a lifetime that last forever but they are making young girls feel good to be themselves.

The Basics Of Buying Safe Toys

Safety should always be first, even when you’re purchasing a toy. You want to make sure your child learns, and has fun without worrying about them getting hurt with the toys they love.

First, check the toy recall list. With all the recalls lately, you want to make sure the toy your child wants doesn’t appear on that list. Playskool has been advertising that they have not had any of their toys on recent recall lists so you may want to keep that brand in mind.

Make sure the toys are age appropriate. You want to check for any small parts in toys made for ages 3 and under. Stuffed animals are not a good idea for young babies, as the eyes or nose can come off or if it is placed in their crib. You’d be increasing the risk for SIDS.

With all the lead recalls lately, a lot of parents are leery of painted toys. You can buy toys from “Melissa & Doug”, a popular US brand. Their toys are lead free. If you have already purchased painted toys, then get a lead kit and test the toys just to double check that they’re safe for your child.

Be cautious of soft vinyl toys, as they have been known to have high toxin levels, including lead.

Pull toys with strings attached are very cute for babies, yet they do pose a dangerous strangulation hazard. Make sure the string is no more than twelve inches long and also don’t let the child play with it when you’re not around.

Be sure to double check where the toy was made. The majority of toys made outside of the United States have tested for high levels of lead and other dangerous toxins.

Toys are not babysitters, so make sure you are always around while your child plays with their toys. Most accidents occur when parents are not looking, therefore make sure your baby does not pick up big brother’s toy or that the older sister does not use their little sister’s rocking horse as a snowboard.

It is such a shame that in this day and age that we have to be so attentive about the safety of a toy, however we have no choice. The key to purchasing safe toys is by being informed of recalls and other information. An informed parent is more likely to be more careful in choosing that perfect toy for their child.

How To Organize And Manage Clutter

Has the chaos factory moved into your home? In other words, are you overrun with stuffed animals, plastic tools, dinky cars, puzzles, dress-up clothes and wigs - the list is never ending?

There are plenty of ways to keep the madness contained with a few quick and easy strategies.

First, throw out the trash! Sift through the toy-box frequently and look for toys that are broken or are missing pieces. You’d be surprised how much you’ll find. Cleanse the junky plastic things that come with a fast-food meal.

Another option is to give some toys to charity when your child outgrows them. Put duplicates and unused toys in a bag and put them in your car. Next time you go out, you can swing by the charity shop and donate your idle things to someone less fortunate.

Next, categorize the toys. There’s no need to spend a fortune on an elaborate shelving system. Use an empty diaper box instead. Cover them in paper and get the kids to help draw a picture of what goes inside. You can have a farm animal box, a dinky car box, a puzzle box - it’s pretty self-explanatory from there.

The third tip is to clean up as you go. There is nothing more overwhelming than trying to clean up an entire day’s worth of work in one shot. Be a broken record and repeat “One thing at a time.” “When you are finished playing with this game, you put it away.” “When you clean up your mess, then we can have a snack.”

Once again this is self-explanatory; Get the kids to help clean up. It can be quite enjoyable, and it can also be managed. Do not put the little darlings to bed and return to a living room littered with toys. Make a final clean-up part of the good old bedtime routine and later enjoy some clutter-free adult time.

Just when you start to get things under control along comes a birthday or Christmas, and in comes a new shipment of stuff. If you feel your children have enough things to play with, you can set up a trust account in your child’s name. Ask for family and friends to use the account to give the gift of education. Any or all of these strategies will help to reduce the clutter-monster in your home and allow you and your kids to enjoy more play time.

Pros And Cons Of Electronic Baby Dolls

Baby dolls have existed ever since someone thought of drawing a face onto a piece of fabric or wood, and have been loved by children world-wide. Toys have resumed becoming more and more sophisticated, and now children demand the very latest in technology for their presents.

But is this good for them?

As parents, you have the duty to care for our child and make him/her happy, but you also have a duty to raise them correctly. This includes supplying the best opportunities to develop educationally and emotionally.

Electronic baby dolls seem so nice at first glance. The commercials on the television are fabulous, and they make every little girl want a baby of their own - just like Mommy!

A baby doll like this will make a child feel like part of the family when Mommy is off dealing with a new baby, because they have a new baby of their own to look after.

There are plenty of down-sides to these dolls, though. Dolls help develop a child’s emotional side. A baby doll is something to be loved. A lot of the love we develop for a special toy comes from the emotions we devote into the relationship.

A toy doesn’t need to respond. This is all part of the child’s development; they are allowed to use their creativity and imagination. The doll can become whatever they want it to be because the reactions aren’t limited by the imagination of the doll manufacturers.

These dolls need to have their batteries replaced, which can damage the environment.

The dolls can be very heavy and quite hard. A doll should be nice, soft and cuddly.

There are also up-sides for these dolls. They allow a child to practice nurturing and enable them to develop the skills they will need when they become parents. They are used in schools to help impending parents learn what it would be like to have a baby in the house. These dolls are very sophisticated and can be programmed by the teacher to demand a response from the career at specific intervals. These are a great idea, and they are sure to help deter some teenagers from becoming parents too soon.

These dolls are good when used as learning tools, but not for the younger child. Young children, both male and female, need to develop their imagination, and giving them a pre-programmed doll is not the way to do it.

A Difficult Period - Baby Teething

It is not unusual for new parents to find that certain times of their child’s developmental period can be very difficult. One of such difficult moments is the child’s teething period because it can cause your infant to fall ill and thereby becoming very cranky. Those babies who are usually very happy can become very fussy while those who will normally eat very well can become very picky about food during this period. Being a new parent, you might not be aware of what is wrong with your baby and become very worried. In addition to the above mentioned signs, your baby may also have a high fever during the teething period and can thus call for great anxiety, especially to the new parent.

It is possible to find a baby teething at about four months of age, though it all depends on the individual baby and not all babies are the same. There are also some babies who do not start teething until they are about a year old so you do not have to be too worried about when it will take place. Depending on the individual baby and the teeth he is growing, some teeth may be harder to grow than others. Sometimes you may even see your baby smile as he or she discovers a new tooth growing. You can actually feel the surface of the gums to see if your baby is teething, especially if he is exceptionally cranky or is not feeling well. Alternatively, you can observe if the tip of the tooth is poking through the gums.

A common sign to see if the baby is teething is the drool. It is not uncommon to see babies soaking their shirts in no time at all. One way to help is to put a bid on your baby’s shirt so that it will soak up the drool instead of soaking through the shirt. You should change the bid whenever it is necessary so as to keep your baby comfortable. You do not have to be overly concern with the drooling as doctors will tell you that it is very common and will go away after awhile.

Another way is to put a special baby ointment on the gums to numb them and this will give some temporary relieve to your baby. Teething rings, which you can freeze, are also available for teething babies to chew on. When babies are teething, they usually like to chew on their toys, hands, shoes or any thing that they can lay their hands on. Older babies may also like to chew on a piece of beef jerky if you offer it to them. As such, it is of great importance that such items are kept clean to prevent your child from falling sick due to the bacteria which they might take in.

It is essential that you comfort your baby when he or she is teething. Such comforts include giving your baby foods and medicine if and when necessary so as to relieve the pain. This is a part of parenting that can be difficult but with great determination, love, patience and support you will definitely get through it. It is extremely important to give your child lots of love and attention because he or she may end up very unhappy during the teething process. Your child is also likely to be exhausted so let him sleep as much as he wants to or is comfortable enough to do so. He will feel happier after some rest. The key point to note is to enjoy the whole process of parenting your child and the difficult period will pass very quickly.

Can I Still Do IVF with My Tubes Tied?

There are several women out there who wish to explore the possibilities of becoming a surrogate mother, but hold themselves back because they have had their tubes tied. They may feel as though they do not qualify since they are medically unable to become pregnant again.

Alternately, those who have previously made a decision not to have any more of their own children, thus tying their tubes, may have had a change of heart later in life with a new relationship. They may feel that they are unable to have another child due to this previous decision.

The fact of the matter is that pregnancy is possible with tied tubes if one undergoes IVF. In fact, many women turn to IVF because they have had tubals that even with a reversal surgery could make getting pregnant again very difficult, if not impossible.

IVF stands for in-vitro fertilization. An egg is retrieved from the ovaries of the intended mother, fertilized in a petri dish with sperm from the intended father, and then transferred back into the womb of the carrier.

The carrier can be either the intended mother herself, or a gestational surrogate mother. Because the eggs are retrieved from the ovaries themselves, it is not necessary for them to travel through the blocked fallopian tubes. Thus, those with tubals pose no complications with the retrieval process.

Gestational surrogate mothers do not participate in the egg retrieval at all; thus it makes no difference if their tubes are tied or not. Their eggs are not needed.

In fact, many clinics, agencies, and intended parents prefer to find a gestational surrogate mother who has had her tubes tied. This tells them that she has no interest in another child of her own and relieves worries about her conceiving her husband’s child instead.

One common reason for surrogacy is an intended mother who has functioning ovaries, but has no uterus, due to hysterectomy or simply because she wasn’t born with one. Through IVF, eggs can be retrieved from these intended mothers and transferred into her surrogate, making it possible for her to still have her biological child.

Though you can still get pregnant via IVF if you have your tubes tied, you cannot become pregnant with your own biological child if you do not have ovaries. In the case of an intended mother without ovaries, an egg donor can be used. Eggs would be retrieved from the donor, fertilized with the intended father’s sperm, and transferred back into the intended mother or surrogate mother.

You can be an egg donor if your tubes are tied, as again, the eggs do not need to go through the fallopian tubes in order to be retrieved. Egg donors are common in gestational surrogacy arrangements.

Modern fertility procedures have come a long way! Now so much is possible. It really brings to mind the term “it takes a village to raise a child”.

A Daily Massage Can Help Your Baby Greatly

In many cultures, baby massage has been an integral part of childcare for centuries.

In countries as far apart as India, Fiji, Nigeria and Bali - and among the Maori in New Zealand - massage starts soon after birth and continues until a baby is at least six or seven months old.

Baby massage has evoked considerable interest in the West, where such a practice is largely nonexistent. To take a closer look at baby massage, the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine conducted a study of Indian mothers performing the traditional massage on newborn babies.

The study, conducted in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1993, found that the daily massage was quite rigorous and that the babies slept soundly afterwards.

In the US, baby massage was first popularized in the late 1980s when Vimala McClure, founder of the International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM), published a book on Indian massage techniques. She also held classes to teach these techniques in the US as well as Europe.

What are the advantages of performing baby massage? Among other benefits, baby massage:

*Stimulates brain activity
*Stimulates hormone production
*Inhibits the production of the stress hormone, cortisol
*May reduce colic and gas
*Increases oxygen flow to the cells
*Enhances a baby’s neurological development and improves her muscle tone
*May soothe the pain of teething

When performing a baby massage, it is important to be aware of the following do’s and don’ts:

*The baby massage must be done in a warm room, with the temperature at about 25 degrees Celsius.
*It is good to have some music playing in the background (but turn the TV off).
*The baby should be unclothed and laid on a towel.
*The baby massage is best done after a bath and before the baby settles down for the night.
*Avoid using too much pressure. To get a sense of the right amount of pressure to use, close your eyes and massage your eyeballs.
*Use the palm of your hand for the baby’s belly and back; for smaller areas, use your fingertips.
*Use grape seed-oil for your baby massage. You run the risk of an allergic reaction with nut-based oils.

You should use your fingertips to start the massage with the baby’s face. The strokes should be gentle, and your fingertips should move upwards over the baby’s cheeks, forehead and chin, circling his eyes, ears, nose and mouth.

You should next move to the baby’s arms, massaging the shoulders before moving down to the arms and wrists. The legs come next. Use your hands to massage upwards, bending the baby’s knees to the belly. This relieves colic and gas pains.

Make circles in a clockwise direction starting at the baby’s belly button and gradually increase the size of the circles. Finally, use your palms to sweep slowly along the back up to the shoulders.

It is important that you do not massage the baby’s spine. And don’t continue the massage if the baby seems uncomfortable. After all, your baby’s enjoyment is paramount.

Stimulating the Right Brain Can Create a Genius Baby

You can create a genius baby if you understand how the human brain is structured. In most adults, the left hemisphere of the brain is dominant. Left-brained people think in a logical, linear manner, while right-brained people think in a non-linear, intuitive fashion. The left-brained learn best through hearing, while the right-brained learn best through seeing and feeling.

Our school system, geared to logical, linear thinking, favors the left-brained. Right-brained children often do only averagely well in school because they are not able to show how they arrived at their answers, having reached them by unusual methods or through sheer intuition.

You should therefore not lose heart if your child gets low grades in school. It may be a sign of a genius in the making! A great example of a right-brained person is the scientist Albert Einstein. An acknowledged genius, he suffered from speech difficulties in early childhood.

So, is there a genius baby in your house? There may well be. As Glenn Doman and Makoto Shichida, two right-brain educators, put it: accessing the right brain enables a child to learn better and could unlock genius-like abilities.

These include speed-reading skills, a photographic memory, the ability to accurately sketch something seen only once, a facility for performing instant math equations, and rare musical talent. The right brain is also responsible for visual and spatial processing, and the ability to see problems in multiple dimensions, as great physicists do. Einstein possessed this ability.

If the right brain is so much more intuitive and creative, why is our left brain more dominant? For a very good reason. It does the important job of filtering out a lot of the information bombarding our senses. This helps us to avoid “sensory overload”.

If the right brain was dominant, we would constantly be reacting to a host of information being thrown at us. Think of the autism sufferer who, being hypersensitive to sensory stimuli, finds ordinary social interactions overwhelming, and you get the idea.

Our left brain helps us hold a conversation while ignoring background noises. It ensures that a great deal of the sensory input we receive remains beneath the radar of conscious awareness.

Right-brain teaching helps us to reclaim some of the benefits of right-brain dominance by changing the way we absorb and recall information. Most people memorize data by storing it in their short-term memory in the left brain. Only repetitive use leads to its transfer it to the long-term memory of the right brain.

Right-brain teaching helps us bypass the left brain and directly access our long-term memory, helping us learn faster. It allows us to recall information received on a subconscious level - for instance, through speed reading.

Unlike left-brain learning, right-brain learning does not require conscious effort. In small children, the right brain is already activated, making learning especially rapid. This is because the right brain develops before the left and is dominant until the age of three and a half.

So, if you want your child to be a genius baby, stimulate her right brain.

Create a Keepsake Baby Blanket Gift Basket for a Memorable and Practical Gift

Keepsake gifts mark the passing of a child’s life. They give you concrete memories of times gone by. They also offer parents an opportunity to bond with their children and create lasting memories. When you combine keepsake gifts with baby blankets you have a winner of a baby gift.

There are milestones throughout a child’s young life. Each new milestone can be turned into a memorable keepsake and a memory. First steps can be commemorated with a footprint. Their first lost tooth can be kept in an engraved tin. A first haircut can be a lock of hair saved in a small tin, and there are so many more. All of these can be commemorated with something special. When you put all of them together they make a great gift a parent will remember throughout their child’s life.

Baby Handprint and Footprint Kits

Having a keepsake of your baby’s handprint or footprint is essential. It is something a parent will look back on often. It is amazing even at two how small an infant’s hands and feet used to be.

You can get baby footprint stamp kits where you use ink to make an impression of the baby’s foot (or hand for that matter). You can also get a baby handprint or footprint kit where you imprint the baby’s handprint in a solid material, like clay or concrete.

In fact, you can buy kits with 5 tins so you can have a memorable hand or footprint for each of the first 5 years of baby’s life. This is a great idea, and will make an amazing memory for the new mom, and a fun activity for the child as they get older. It will be something they look forward to doing together every year.

Milestone Tins:

Milestones such as losing a first tooth, or getting their hair cut for the first time can be commemorated with small silver or gold tins. You can find tins that will have first tooth or first lock engraved right on them. This provides mom a safe place to store these cherished memories.

These keepsake gifts are not necessarily practical gifts, so if you want to make your gift not only memorable, but practical as well you can create a gift basket. If you want to create a wonderful keepsake baby blanket gift basket you can put the keepsake gifts all together in a basket, add a couple soft colorful baby blankets or onesies and have a beautiful gift any new mom would love to receive.

Make Early Learning a Joyous Activity

Early learning can be fun as long as it is kept informal. A baby should be allowed to explore the world around him. Parents should only provide the stimuli, and not make learning a tiresome exercise.

There is a view that babies are not ready for early learning. Nothing could be more misconceived. All babies love to explore and learn from their environment. What children (and for that matter, adults) are reluctant to learn is what is forced on them.

Your goal should be to encourage your child’s natural fondness for learning. This process, if begun early, can ease what some deem the “burden” of education. Studies have shown that early learning can give children an edge over their peers.

The success of early learning depends on the teaching style. The teacher who makes learning fun can teach much more than the teacher who tries to drum lessons into the minds of children.

A child also does not like to be tied to a chair or a routine that is soul destroying. It is important to keep the child engaged through means that make learning a joyous activity.

This is where games or story sessions can fire a child’s imagination. The child becomes a part of the teaching, and not an end-object of teaching.

Another argument against early learning is that a young child’s brain is not sufficiently mature to handle “complex” tasks such as reading or solving mathematical equations. Quoting neuroscience, some developmentalists argue that children are not ready to start learning to read until the age of six or even seven.

Yet, at Shichida Academies around Asia, children as young as two or three are able to add, subtract, divide or multiply two- or even three-digit figures. There are numerous videos on YouTube showing babies as young as 12 months - or even 9 months, in the case of Aleka Titzer - reading and comprehending the meanings of dozens of words.

Those who question early learning should understand the different ways in which the brain can learn. The reason so many people have trouble with math is because we follow a system of education that addresses the left hemisphere of the brain alone. The left brain analyzes and stores information using logic. Right-brain learning, by contrast, comes instantaneously and effortlessly. In children under the age of three and a half, the right hemisphere of the brain is dominant - and so it is easy to tap into the seemingly amazing abilities of the right brain.

This is why the learning that takes place in the very earliest years of life is of unparalleled value. Not only does it happen naturally, but it will form the foundation of your child’s future intelligence. All you need to do is provide the right stimulation - and attitude - to make early learning fun for your child.

6 Tips on Choosing the Best Baby Nursing Pillow

I have researched baby nursing pillows and have interviewed breastfeeding mothers to find out what makes the best baby nursing pillow.

I hope this information will save you lots of time and help you decide which is the best breastfeeding pillow for you and your new baby. You may know breastfeeding is best, but it doesn’t always come naturally for every mom. Finding a good nursing pillow can increase the chances of you creating a good breastfeeding relationship with your baby.

Here are the 6 most important tips to help you to buy the best nursing pillow for you and your child.

1: The most important thing to look for is that the actual pillow itself is waterproof under the pillow cover. Some nursing pillows don’t have any protection for the pillow, they just have fabric covers that you can take off and wash, but have no barrier for the actual pillow itself. It doesn’t take them long to become smelly and damp from milk spills and baby dribble!

2: You need to make sure that the pillow is firm enough to fully support your back and neck when you are feeding baby. It also needs to be thick enough for you so you won’t have to bend and hunch over when feeding. If you are buying online make sure you can return the pillow if you are not happy with it. You could try to test it with a doll before baby is born to check that it is perfect for you.

3: Ask other breastfeeding mums what their favorites are. It’s always great to have someone the same size as you tell you what has worked for them. As mothers come in all sizes, what suits one may not suit another. A good recommendation from a breastfeeding mom can save you a lot of time and aggravation when buying a nursing pillow.

4: Ask a lactation consultant what brands she would recommend. They will know what helps baby get a proper latch, and what nursing pillows mothers prefer.

5: If you are having a c-section, you may find it difficult to use a nursing pillow at all. It is possible to breastfeed your baby after a c-section, you may just need to get professional support to help you with your breastfeeding. Most hospitals have a lactation consultant on staff who can help you.

6: Find one that is easy to get on and off. Sometimes baby will fall asleep while feeding and the last thing you need is to wake him while trying to get ties undone and the nursing pillow off.

Give Importance To Caring For Baby, Baby Names

Perhaps one of the most exciting part of being a parent is when we are to choose for baby names and buying baby shower gifts. In fact, many parents are striving to search for the top 100 baby boy names and unique baby girl names– full of excitement. However, there is more important than finding for rare baby names and that is thinking for proper care, ensuring that our babies are safe– especially during after vaccinations.

Noo ne desires getting shots when they go to the doctor. But as a parent, it can be even more difficult when it is time for your baby to receive one– vaccination. In some cases, a baby will have a mild reaction to a vaccination, and might have trouble in sleeping as a result. You can help minimize your baby’s discomfort by making sure he is comfortable and well-rested when visiting the doctor’s office and you can use home treatments to help relieve some of the more common minor reactions to vaccinations.

If your child manifests a slight fever, try giving him acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil). This can help reduce a fever and ease any pain felt in the location of the shot. Remember to never give aspirin to your baby because of the risk involved specifically of Reye’s Syndrome. The injection site might also become reddish and swollen. A cool compress or ice pack put to the part for approximately 10 to 20 minutes can also give relief. A mild skin rash might develop 7 to 14 days after the injection, specifically with the chickenpox or measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Though this type of rash can last for multiple days, it usually disappears on its own without treatment.

You might find your baby is more fretful and restless and refuse to eat after a vaccination procedure. If you can keep the commotion down at home, and cuddle and hold your child when he needs it, it will greatly help him feel more comfortable and relaxed when it comes to bedtime. Another is, make sure he has plenty of liquids. Maintaining the house and the room baby sleeps in at a comfortable temperature will also help, as he is more likely to be fussy and restless if he’s too warm. Try to bear in mind that if your baby does become a bit restless in the night that the discomfort is only temporary, and he is most likely to get right back on track with his sleeping and eating schedule soon.

Supplies for School - Save and Keep Your Children Happy

This is that time of year — you know, the time for buying supplies for school, getting new clothes and reorganizing everything to fit with your children’s busy schedules. Most parents do not look forward to the rush of buying school supplies and wandering through endless racks of clothing to find the clothes that fit both their children’s tastes and sizes. What they look forward to is having a little time to breathe when their children get off to school on their first day, prepared with the necessary school supplies and looking great in their new school clothes.

Saving on Supplies for School - The Essentials

If you have a complete list of supplies for school needed by each child, do not deviate from the list. Yes, children will always want the coolest things, like gel pens, colored pencils, an iPod. But they do not need these things. Stick to your list and if your children are insistent, suggest nicely that they save their allowance and buy these things themselves.

If you have the ability to pass things down from one child to the next, do it. But make it a point to let the older child know that the new backpacks and trendy lunch boxes are going to their younger siblings because they are the one getting new clothing. As the youngest child, I know what it is to have to wear hand-me-downs from my big sister. The only thing that saved the day was the prospect of getting something new that she would not have. These things are important to children and to you if peace is on your priority list for school supplies.

Of course each child needs at least one new outfit for school. The horror of going to school on the first day wearing old clothes would be traumatic for most kids. As a mom, it is your duty to make sure each child wears new clothes for the first day of school. To kids, school supplies are less important. Seek out discount clothing at outlets and sales. Smaller children will be happy with a nice outfit from a consignment shop. Just make sure the clothes are stylish and don’t tell them where you got them and everything will be fine. Shoes are also non-negotiable. You can find great sales on shoes this time of year and most of the offer bargains on multiple pairs.

The best way to get great deals on supplies for school is to go to the least expensive places. One of these places just might be your own house. Look around. Do you have extra folders, notebooks, pens, pencils or paper lying around? Gather everything you can that is on your children’s list of supplies for school before you head out to go shopping. Look in dollar stores for the smaller items. Obviously you won’t find the big binders there, but you may find one subject notebooks and are sure to find pencils, pens, rulers and paperclips. If you’ve never checked the dollar store for school supplies, you will be pleasantly surprised when you do. Hit the best sales by checking the buyer’s guide as soon as you get it. When you see a sale on school supplies, try to get there bright and early on the first day. If you wait, you will likely miss out on the best bargains and end up staring at empty shelves where the 20 cent notebooks used to be. The best way to avoid the problem is to purchase school supply items throughout the year. Buy in bulk when it saves you money. If you have a little extra one day at the grocery store and you notice a sale on pencils that can’t be beat, buy them up. Who cares if it is June? This fall, you will be that much ahead of the game.

Saving on school supplies can be easy if you use your imagination and prepare ahead of time. Don’t wait until the last minute if you really want the best bargains on supplies for school.

Supplemental Learning at Home

For many years education was thought to be something that takes place in school. However, through the years the competition has increased greatly, and parents have started realizing that education is incomplete without third person interference. So, now parents chip in playing their part as an additional teacher or as a guide overlooking the progress of the child at school.

The term parent involvement is used broadly in this report. It includes several different forms of participation in education and with the schools. Parents can support their children’s schooling by attending school functions and responding to school obligations (parent-teacher conferences, for example). They can become more involved in helping their children improve their schoolwork–providing encouragement, arranging for appropriate study time and space, modeling desired behavior (such as reading for pleasure), monitoring homework, and actively tutoring their children at home.

This helps the child both morally and mentally. When you help the child in his studies, he thinks that there is someone looking after him and his performance at school. This actually helps the child because he feels accountable to someone at home, thus pushing him towards studies. Little things such as asking your child about his day at the school every night can go a long way in the child’s performance in the school.

Research shows that children whose parents were involved in the process of education performed much better at school, had higher ambitions, wanted to learn more, and wanted to attain higher education than other children. The research also shows that the earlier in a child’s educational process parent involvement begins, the more powerful the effects will be.

Educators frequently point out the critical role of the home and family environment in determining children’s school success, and it appears that the earlier this influence is harnessed, the greater the likelihood of higher student achievement. Researchers have also found that the schools with the most successful parent involvement programs are those which offer a variety of ways parents can participate.
Apart from performance at school, parents’ involvement also helps in molding the behavior and attitude of children.

The involvement first and foremost strengthens the bond between the child and the parent, developing a mutual trust and promoting interaction between them. This interaction also helps the children in dealing with teenage struggles such as depression, aggression and obsession more effectively and positively. Also, the research also reveals that parents who are involved have a more positive attitude about school.

The research also shows that in schools where parent-teacher interaction opportunities were less common, the results of the school were not as high.

Pregnancy Diet - What Kind of Fish is Safe To Eat While Pregnant?

Your pregnancy diet is paramount to the health and well being of your unborn baby. What you eat provides the building blocks for the baby’s body, and brain.

Choosing a healthy pregnancy diet is getting more and more complicated with so many things off limits it’s hard to know what’s allowed anymore.

Fish is one example of this. Fish used to be a healthy source of protein, with good oils and many wonderful nutrients.

Now with increased pollution of the oceans fish has gotten a litle trickier to add to a pregnancy diet.

Here are some pregnancy fish facts to keep you eating the good kind of fish and avoiding the bad.

Raw Fish and Shellfish

This is an absolute no-no for pregnant women. Sushi is off the good fish list until after you give birth.

There is no way to kill any bacteria living in/on fish when you serve it raw. This leaves you and your baby at risk of food poisoning.

High Mercury Fish

Everyone’s hearing about Mercury, in vaccines, ground water, and now in our fish. The fish that are the biggest mercury threat are the fish that eat other fish and those that stay on the bottom of the ocean floor.

The main fish to avoid because of Mercury contamination are shark, swordfish, tilefish, and King Mackeral.

Tuna Fish?

There is some mercury threat in tuna, but it is not as high as the other fish already mentioned. You are best to stick to less than 6 oz a week of tuna. Make sure you are eating White albacore when you eat tuna.

So What Fish Can I Eat?

You can eat fresh water fish like trout, catfish, and salmon.

You can also eat shellfish, like shrimp, lobster and crab.

How Much Fish Can I Eat?

Even though the risk in eating these types of fish are lower you want to limit your fish intake, even the “good” fish to no more than 12 ounces a week.

This will give you the benefits of good oils and nutrients fish provide, but will help you avoid any detrimental effects of the fish.

Eating less than 12 ounces of fish each week gives your body time to rid itself of any impurities that might be found in the fish, so they don’t build up and cause health problems for you and your baby.

Eating fish can be confusing, but it can also be part of a healthy pregnancy diet. Make sure you stick to the guidelines, and if you have any questions make sure to ask your doctor.

How to Crack the Ivy Code

Admission to top colleges and universities has never been more difficult.

Harvard broke all records this year, accepting just 7.1 percent of applicants, while Yale accepted 8.3 percent, Columbia 10 percent, and Princeton 9.3 percent. Brown and Dartmouth accepted 13 percent and 13.2 percent, respectively. Williams, Bowdoin, Middlebury, and Amherst Colleges accepted 16.3 percent, 18.4 percent, 18.3 percent, and 14.2 respectively. Swarthmore College granted admission to a record-low 15 percent, while the University of Pennsylvania admitted 16.4 percent. Boston College admitted a record-low 26 percent of applicants, and Duke reported record selectivity admitting 19 percent. The overall Ivy acceptance rate this past year was 12% — again, an all time low.

With Harvard and Princeton dropping early decision/action and Harvard, Dartmouth, Swarthmore and Tufts announcing expansions of financial aid in recent months, the pool of applicants for the Ivy League and other top schools is overwhelmed with qualified students and as a consequence, this year was the lowest ever in terms of acceptances. We don’t see this trend changing any time soon with a population bubble increasing the number of teenagers and more and more highly credentialed students applying. This year there are 3.23 million graduating U.S. high school seniors, and 60-65% of them now apply to colleges. The swelling population of 18-year-olds will peak in 2009, when the largest group of high school seniors in the nation’s history, 3.2 million, are to graduate.

We receive hundreds of emails a week from devastated high school seniors who did not receive the news they had hoped for in the college admissions journey this year. Many of them had high scores, great extras, and amazing grades. We also hear from younger high school students who are desperately seeking the secrets that will make them stand out amid the scores of other super qualified applicants. The results for the students we’ve worked with in our Application Boot Camp workshops have been astounding. But, we can’t work with everyone personally, so we wanted to share our knowledge about what it takes to stand out and achieve success in the grueling Ivy League admissions process.

We believe that knowledge is power! There is less stress when we know what it is we have to do…SO…to that end…Here’s what it takes to get into America’s top colleges:

1. Grades. This is one of the first areas a college admissions board will consider. Even if a student’s SAT scores are sky-high, high school grades matter the most. A student who starts off strong but lets his grades lag in the final year, or vice versa, will have a hard time in the admissions process. Colleges want to see grades trend up in tough classes and students in the top 10% of their class. At Dartmouth this year, 93.4 percent of accepted students ranked in the top 10 percent of their secondary school’s graduating class. Our students who have gotten into top colleges typically are A students who have taken 5-6 Advanced Placement tests.

2. Test scores. The SAT score is a big part of the admission’s picture because colleges report their freshman class averages to U.S. News and World Report. The biggest mistakes we see students make is waiting until their senior year to take their first SAT test. Remember, colleges will see all of your SAT scores and will count the highest score in each section. So, begin early and take your first SAT in December or January of your junior year. That gives you time to retake it if you need to do so, with SAT preparation in-between. We don’t much like group SAT classes, but rather encourage students to work with someone who can teach you how to be a savvier test taker or to learn that skill yourself. We supply resources on our website including some amazing tutors.

3. Extracurricular activities. Don’t trust the lists of suggested extras that some college preparation sites offer. An admissions board will be much more impressed if you follow your passions and take them above and beyond. Show leadership and a theme. Use your summers to deepen that niche or themed interest.

4. Awards. Students who are talented, driven and dedicated will be seen favorably by college admissions boards. State, district or national awards in an area of expertise will set a student far apart from their competition.

5. Hooks. Sure, if you happen to be a legacy, recruited athlete, development case, famous person or have any other major ties to a particular college, leverage that hook!

While the Harvard acceptance rate and other Ivy League admissions rates are surprisingly low, it is by no means impossible to win a spot at one of these schools. For the exceptional student who works hard and prepares for college applications well in advance, an Ivy League education is still within reach.

Toys Take Up The Fun

Toys are everywhere! They come in all shapes, sizes, and brands. Most toys are created to provide pure enjoyment for children while others are made to help stimulate a child’s mind in a fun way. In any case, toys are a great way to keep a youngster occupied.

Some of the most popular toys out on the market these days are action figures and Barbie dolls. Some action figures are based on movies that have recently hit the theatres. For example, one award winning action figure is The Incredible Hulk, which is a movie that came on June 13th, 2008. Barbie dolls have been around for over 49 years and they have still been running strong! There is a Barbie for each little girl’s fantasy. The joy of Barbie is that you can dress her up and match her clothes with accessories sold separately. Barbie’s hair is also another attraction as it comes long and pliable so that little girls can arrange and decorate her hair as they please.

Toys don’t necessarily have to be action figures or dolls. They can even be audio books. No, audio books are not just for adults. They help children appreciate stories that are heard as well as those written on paper. Since a lot of audio books include a cast of readers as well as sound effects, it is easy for even the younger children to get caught up in the excitement of the story as it is being told.

Educational toys include LeapFrog and Fisher-Price products. Fisher-Price has been providing fun education for children everywhere since 1930. Some brands under this name are Disney, Sesame Street, Barney, Dora the Explorer, and See ‘n Say. If you can stir up a child’s love of learning when they are young, that drive to learn new and interesting things will stay with him or her right into adulthood. Keep in mind, not all learning has to take place in a formal environment. Of course, school is important, but we should be open to learning new things in a variety of settings.

Whether it be a toy that was made for all fun and games or a toy that was made for teaching a child new things, you can’t go wrong. Toys are a great gift for a kid of any age and for any occasion. Suppose it is little Mike’s 6th birthday. What ever should you get him? A toy airplane is not a bad idea at all! But what about little Sara? What should you get her for Christmas? Every little girl with their very own dollhouse would hold it dear to their hearts.

Action Figures VS. Toy Trucks

Two of the most popular toy items for little boys are action figures and toy trucks or cars. If they were to see one of those items under a Christmas tree, they would most likely freak out with excitement and start playing with them immediately. It is true; action figures and toy trucks are a hit with young boys. But which one is more popular than the other?

An action figure is a plastic figurine of a character, often from a movie, comic book, video game, or television program. These action figures usually are marketed towards little boys. One category of action figures that is always in high demand is the superhero action figure. Some superheroes such as Superman, Batman and Spiderman are perennial favorites, while the popularity of others goes dormant until the next major motion picture remake. With the latest installment of the mega-popular Spiderman movies, Spiderman and his mixture of villains appear to be in power over the superhero action figure market for the moment.

With a popular animated series and movie, Batman is also a favorite action figure. The oldest superhero of the bunch, Superman, has been slowly but surely making a comeback. With a popular Superman-themed television series and a major motion picture on the way, it is safe to say that Superman action figures will never stray far from the top of the list.

Males seem to have a natural attraction to vehicles. With that in mind, young boys love playing with toy cars. They obviously can’t drive a real car, but they can definitely pretend they can if they had a toy truck they could ride on. On the other hand, if the boy is a speedy one, he’ll thoroughly enjoy playing with a radio-controlled car. With that, they can go as fast as they want! Though sometimes derided by users of more expensive and sophisticated hobby-grade equipment, toy R/C is an excellent way to teach a youngster basic vehicle control and to hopefully spark his interest in the hobby.

Next time you are out shopping for a present for a boy who is age 8 or younger; do not hesitate to get him an action figure. Action figures are a slightly better hit than toy vehicles. However, no matter the popularity level, either or both of these toy items are highly recommended for young boys. Now you know what to get them for their next birthday or for Christmas.

Wooden Toys Surpass Plastic Toys

When it comes to plastic toys and wooden toys, there is more of a chance that plastic toys will be purchased. However, consumers don’t seem to consider buying a wooden toy for their kid instead. In a few ways, it would be more worth the while to get.

Let’s think of a few differences between the two. Plastic toys: they can break easily and the edges could harm the little children. Wooden toys, on the other hand, are more durable. If you were to stand on a toy truck made of plastic, there is a great chance that it will break, possibly leaving sharp edges that could cut your child; and be fit only for the rubbish.

Standing on a wooden truck is more likely to result in damage to you or whoever stood on the truck though one wouldn’t actually suggest it. They can be played with for years and years and still look like new. Speaking of years and years, wooden toys may provide family stories and build up fun memories in the mind. When after so many years you get to see your very old toy, as they are very durable, old memories freshen up. Wooden toys can be passed on from generation to generation. Because the design is very seldom complex, they don’t date.

Here are some more reasons why wooden toys should be chosen over plastic. Many plastic toys are mechanized and do a lot on their own without the help of the kid. Wooden toys tend to be more passive, which means that the child has to become more involved and this can stimulate their imagination and be more stimulating. A more passive toy may also encourage greater problem solving skills. Another reason is wooden toys can make for a nice decoration for your home when the child outgrows them.

Wooden toys do not contain any harmful chemicals whereas plastic toys contain PVC also known as Vinyl which can be harmful to children should they ever put the toy in their mouth. Provided they are not painted with lead based paint which is only likely if it is an heirloom or if it is a cheap foreign import, wooden toys do not present any health hazard whereas plastic toys can be full of chemicals that are harmful if the child ever puts the toy in their mouth.

Wooden toys give a picture of the craftsmanship as compared to a plastic toy. Plastic toys generally do not depict any creativity by hand. Therefore, wooden toys are considered to be better than plastic toys. They bring joys and refresh memories in the future.

Nighttime Adventures for the Whole Family

Fun for the whole family doesn’t have to take you to expensive theme parks and long trips. You can have a great bonding activity, even when you are at home. One way to introduce something new for your kids is to play night games with them. You can set up a shadow puppet show, and act out your kids’ favorite story book with your hands or puppets. You can also put up a make shift campsite in your living room or back yard, and tell stories or sing songs together.

Another innovative way to create unique family fun is to purchase night vision equipment. Forget about spending time in front of the computer screen or video game console, as night time fun with night vision can be a new activity that lets you enjoy and bond at the same time. This can be an educational experience for them, too. Where can you buy these specialized viewing equipment? Fortunately enough, there are many online stores that offer them at discounts, with convenient modes of payment, and will even ship your purchase to your doorstep.

If you’re interested in night-vision games, be aware of the following: There are different types of night vision equipment that you can purchase, depending on your preference and mode of use. You can choose from binoculars, with two lenses, or monoculars, which are like hand-held telescopes. For more heavy duty night vision usage, goggles are the way to go, which have a head attachment, infrared capability, and adjustable magnification. The important thing that moms and dads must observe is safety. Night vision equipment can cause eye damage if the area being viewed is suddenly brightened by a light being switched on. It is advised to read the instructions on the equipment carefully before attempting to use them. Be aware, the kids will think using these things is the most cool thing they ever did.

You can have night time scavenger hunts, or simulate hunting games with your kids. You can also try night animals in your back yard like birds, bats, some rodents, and insects. The important thing that moms and dads must observe is safety.

Another idea is to play nighttime hide-and-seek. Kids loving playing this game with adults. Invite some of your friends over and play a huge game of kids against adults! Combine the fun with a bonfire and roasted marshmallows. The family will have a great time and remember it for years to come.

Heather thinks cheap night vision binoculars would be the envy of your kids’ friends! You can purchase night vision binoculars online.

Stuffed Friends For Your Kids

Young children, especially little girls, enjoy having their very own tea party in their room. Well, what fun is a tea party without stuffed animals as guests? They are always very polite!

Stuffed animals, or plush toys, can actually be very good company. If your child is feeling lonely or sad, they can always grab their precious teddy bear and squeeze it as tight as they can until they feel better. They might also grab their stuffed bunny, stuffed duck, or even their stuffed kitty cat if they need some comfort or someone to talk to.

Your child’s stuffed friend does not have to be all big and bulky. A Ty beanie baby is just as special! They can even bring it with them on trips and put them in their pocket. They may be a bit smaller than other brands of plush toys or stuffed animals, but they are just as effective when it comes to keeping your child company.

With a stuffed animal, kids are able to let their imaginations run completely wild. They can have the aforementioned tea party, they can play house, and they can also give them names and a voice and have a conversation with them. To them it would be like having the best friend in the whole world.

In this day and age, you can build your own best friend. All you have to do is take your kid to Build-A-Bear Workshop. Of course, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a bear. It can be just about whatever your child wants it to be. Build-A-Bear Workshop is the major create-your-own animal service, with the other companies in the business consisting of regional and/or locally-owned operations. The motto of the company is “Where Best Friends Are Made.” That sounds promising, does it not?

Friends are one of the most important things in life. Everybody needs someone to talk to or someone to cheer them up at some point. Kids will have real friends; no doubt about it. In spite of this, there is not anything wrong with having a friend that is made up of straw, beans, or cotton. There are plenty of places where you can purchase these fun-filled critters; Toys’R’Us, K-Mart, Walmart, and you may even find Ty beanie babies somewhere in Shop Rite or Path Mark. Wherever you get them, the person you get them for is sure to be satisfied.

Should Dolls Be Role Models?

Children have to learn off something or someone. Whether it is from school, or from their classmates, they gain new knowledge wherever they go. You know how kids are; they imitate just about everything they see and hear. It would be normal for a little girl to want to have a little sister named Kelly and drive a pink car some day if Barbie was their favorite doll.

Should dolls be role models? Many people think not, especially not Barbie. If anything, American Girl dolls would be great for your daughter. American Girl is part Disney, part Barbie, part Nancy Drew and part Tipper Gore. Its great cause, other than making money, is the defense of girlish innocence. It presents its characters as wholesome alternatives to the trash-talking, navel-baring role models who tower over television and pop music.

Then again, dolls are just another form of toys. We all know toys are made to make a child’s day. Dolls are not really role models. They are toys, and toys are just tools for our children to express themselves creatively. The children who play with Barbie dolls and show signs of the behaviors associated with Barbie are not modeling Barbie, but rather what they are being shown in other areas of their lives.

Dolls should be just toys. They help promote the imagination of young minds. The same thing goes for action figures, no matter what anyone says, they are just toys to be played with. They are not going to affect a child’s life nor are the going to affect their future. The only true role models in their lives are their elders. They look to their elders to see what is right and what is wrong. They imitate the actions of individuals older than themselves because, well, that is just their nature.

Let’s face it, dolls are not going to get kids through school or find a good paying job later on in life. The only thing dolls are good for is entertainment for kids. We can’t count on plastic and fabric to show kids what to do and what not to do. That would be like counting on a so-called psychic to tell you your future with a crystal ball and some cards. We should take responsibility for what goes into the minds of young children. Protect them from the filth that is the world of pop music today. Be a good role model to your kids.

Broken Toys And What To Do About Them

To your child’s dismay, a piece of their much loved toy has broken off and the fun of playing with it has decreased. To your dismay, you are going to have to either break your child’s heart by throwing it out or pay money for a whole new one. What are you going to do?

Suppose you decide to get rid of the broken toy. After all, what good is it if it is broken? However, the young child will grow more emotionally involved to it once he/she learns that it is going to be thrown out. The best thing to do in that situation is to wait until the child is asleep or out of the house. Not only does that make it that much easier to discard the toy, but it may provide time for you to replace it. That is, of course, if the toy is that special to them.

This tactic would be more effective if it were carried out close to the kid’s birthday or even Christmas time. If by any chance your kid does not get out much, which effects the “wait until they are gone” tactic, tell him/her that you will only get them a new toy if they give away some of their old ones first. They can then decide to give that toy to a friend if they so desire. Afterwards, when you get him/her a brand new toy for Christmas or their birthday, they will be twice as happy.

Another strategy that might be effective is storing the busted toy in a secret place for a while. If it is not missed after a long amount of time, you are free to dispose of it. Needless to say, you can’t let the kid see you taking it away. This goes back to the aforementioned “wait until they are gone” tactic.
