Understanding Sound Therapy For Babies

Numerous studies have been conducted in recent years specific to sound therapy used for babies. The results show that certain sounds actually create a calming effect and in some instances, help bring balance to the mind, body, and spirit. Other benefits to sound therapy discovered include the ability to decrease pain and reduce emotional distress.

While some newborn babies have a smooth transition from womb to world, others have a more difficult time adjusting. In a situation such as this, sound therapy would be helpful. The key is choosing the right sound, vibration, and even words. While the true power of healing associated with sound therapy is not fully understood, what scientists and parents who have used this technology do know is that it works.

Another scenario in which sound therapy would be beneficial for a baby has to do with health or illness related issues. As an example, if a newborn had to undergo some type of surgery, sound would promote healing to the body while also keeping him or her more comfortable from an emotional standpoint. Additionally, if a baby were dealing with a case of colic, which is very stressful for the baby and parent sound therapy would help the baby relax.

This ancient method of healing is becoming more and more popular as frustrated parents look for ways to keep their child happy and calm. The theory behind this type of therapy is that everything within the universe is in an ongoing state of vibration, which includes the human body. Therefore, if there is even the slightest disruption or change, a person’s mental state, emotions, and internal organs could be negatively impacted.

If a parent were interested in using sound therapy to help their newborn adjust or get past a health problem or illness, two options are available. The first would be for the parent to work directly with a sound therapist. This person is a highly trained professional that directs certain sound waves to help restore balance to mind and body.

However, the parent might also consider purchasing a sound machine to be used at home. For a small investment around $100, a high quality machine would use sounds from nature, music, or even voice to balance the baby’s mind, helping him or her have a much better beginning in life. Many different sound therapy machines are sold, one of the most popular being the S-650, designed to produce realistic sound and a machine loaded with features.

Melissa Nathans recommends white noise machines and sound machines for babies, children and adults. For more information, check out http://www.sleepwellbaby.com where you can learn more about sound therapy products to help babies, adults and children sleep better.

How Parents Can Effectively Manage ADHD Children

As a parent, you will want the best for your child. You wan them to grow up and develop into a healthy, strong and independent individual; to estbalish themselves in a forward moving career and have a family.

Also, you will find that many youngsters will play and become hyper and distracted on some occassions, which is considered part of growing up. However, you may be a parent who has a child who is overly hyper and becomes confused or distracted, thus you may find that they have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD.

There are medicines and different therapies that can help with this, but many parents might wonder what else they can do to help their children. Some food may help ADHD and some other food may be good to limit or avoid for children with ADHD. Knowing the foods to eat and those to avoid can help in making children with this disorder, happier and healthier for a long time into the future.

If we look at recent studies about chilren with ADHD, we find that some research has shown the causes of ADHD in children could be as a result of an individual’s diet and a deficiency of certain vitamins and minerals - these include a deficiency in omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamin C, zinc, and possibly iron.

Not getting enough Omega 3 fatty acids has been linked to some symptoms of ADHD and some children with ADHD show other symptoms of an Omega 3 fatty acid deficiency such as dry skin and hair, thirst, and frequent urination. Some studies have shown that children with ADHD that were given fish oil supplements shown some improvements.

Also, some studies have found that children with ADHD may have more food allergies and they lose vitamins due to be allergic to foods such as: wheat, corn, soy, citrus, chocolate, eggs, artificial colors and preservatives. Some children with ADHD may also be allergic to food dye and in studies when these foods were taken away, some symptoms showed improvement. Giving children with ADHD zinc and iron supplements seemed to improve symptoms in some cases.

You will need to keep an eye on what your child eats and help them stay away from food additives and anything children with ADHD could be allergic to. Doing so will help improve their symptons and make them less hyperactive. You may also find that giving them Vitamin C supplements will help improve the symptoms too. And, consulting a doctor, about other concerns, medicines and for regular routine checkups, is also advisable.

There is strong importance for a child with ADHD to have enough vitamins and minerals to live a long and happy life, but there are certain vitamins and minerals that may cause the symptoms to get worse. This is the main reason for you to insist on your child eating a healthy and balanced diet, and for them to exercise regularly. This will mean that your child with ADHD will stay healthier and happier for longer.

The Truth About Potty Training in the United States

Before parents were able to purchase disposable diapers in any strip mall across the country, the vast majority of American children were potty trained prior to blowing out the candles on their first birthday cake.

That all started to change in the late 1950s and 1960s when parents in this country first started deciding to put off potty training until after their child’s first year, with the idea being that their child would be completely potty trained by the age two.

This was a radical philosophy at the time. The concept was first introduced by a Dr. Brazelton. The good Dr. argued that children are only ready to be trained after they are able to walk by themselves. This as we know doesn’t happen until some time between the ages of 1 and 1 1/2 thereby completely altering the paradigm for when potty training would take place.

Dr. Brazelton’s philosophy was considered a substantial delay at that time, but if we jump ahead fifty years in this country, we see that the majority of American parents are now being advised to postpone potty training until their child has the verbal and motor skills that are more often associated with a 3 year old toddler.

Is this postponement considered progress?

In the meantime, the rest of the world continues to happily potty train their children without the use of readily available disposables - without pressure, undue punishing, or any other form of psychological damage inflicted upon their child during the first 2 years of life.

When you consider that throughout the history of the world children have been trained far earlier than what is now commonplace in the United States, you have to ask yourself, “Are we doing the right thing in this country?”

Here are a few potty training facts to consider:

The average age for potty training in this country has steadily risen. Back in the 1940s, the average age was eighteen months. Today, it has jumped to thirty-five months for girls and a staggering thirty-nine months for boys.
Potty training a child early has zero effect on the development of their personality. Countless studies clearly demonstrate this, contrary to popular belief.
Parents can start the process of potty training at any age.
Teaching a child to use the potty can be every bit as easy as teaching them to stack blocks.
It’s never too early to start potty training.

We’ve been going backwards in this country for a while now. Perhaps it’s time to turn ourselves back around and start heading in the other direction.

Now You Can Select the Gender of Your Baby

Determining the sex of our children has always been a desire of mankind. For this, just think of the royal houses that always looked forward to the arrival of a male.

The influence on the sex of the baby is based on the relationship between ovulation and time of intercourse.

The U.S. scientists Lendran B. Shettls and David M. Rorwik of Harvard University conducted a study on the method of sex selection. They investigated that the sperms with one X chromosome, responsible for conceiving a girl, live much longer than those with a Y chromosome (crucial to the conception of a boy). While the latter are faster, they cannot survive more than a day.

The research observed that in the ejaculate, sperm cells with Y chromosomes are more in number on an average, than cells with chromosome X. This excess is diminished when sperms enter the acidic environment of the vagina during sex. X sperms that manage to survive in this environment longer than sperm Y.

The closer is ovulation, more alkaline the vaginal secretions become, thus increasing the chances of fertilization by a sperm Y. It follows that the most important role in the “method of sex selection” is the relationship between ovulation and the day of intercourse.

When you have sex in 2 or 3 days prior to ovulation, the environment of the vagina is acidic, which is very favorable for the sperm X. If you do it just before ovulation, the chances of conceiving a boy are increased.

In addition, there are number of other factors that influence the sex of the baby: for instance, if the woman reaches orgasm before the man, a hormone is released that makes the environment more alkaline and is more likely to conceive a male child. If you want to have a boy, it is important to abstain sexually between 4 and 7 days before ovulation. During this time, the concentration of sperm increases, and therefore there are more chances of conceiving a child. Higher temperatures are not favorable to the Y sperm, which are mostly smaller and less resistant. Therefore, it is advisable for men not to have bath with hot water and not to wear tight clothes.Shettls recommended that parents should aim for deep penetration during intercourse to conceive a male child, because this would produce ejaculation near the cervix.

If you want a girl, it is recommended to maintain relations between 2 and 4 days before ovulation. In this case, the sperm with X chromosomes that live longer and produce a female baby. They can wait in the fallopian tubes for the egg to be fertilized. If you are planning to have a girl, have sex daily starting from the last day of menstruation until 2-4 days before ovulation. This will cut the number of sperm in the semen. In this case the missionary position is most favorable, because the semen will not stop directly at the cervix and the acidic environment is more conducive to sperm X. Women should not reach orgasm during sex.

In summary it can be said that both the conception of a baby as well as the prediction of sex of the baby depend crucially on the determination of the date of ovulation. In most cases, women do not notice their ovulation. Only 10-15% of cases, women feel a slight pain in the abdomen when the follicle ruptures.

Fertility monitors help determine the fertile days and predict ovulation. If you also want to plan the sex of your baby, it is best to use a fertility monitor in order to determine the date of ovulation, and proceed as described above on the theory of sex selection.

We would note that the conception of one sex in particular depends on several factors and that the recommendations above simply increase the chances of achieving the desired sex but nothing is guaranteed hundred percent.

Why a Good Umbrella Stroller is Essential Equipment for Every Family

The news of the pending arrival of a new baby is invariably accompanied by a flurry of excitement heaped on both the expecting parents as well as family and friends. It usually isn’t long after the word is out that mom & dad start to look for the “stuff” that will be needed once baby arrives.

This applies not only to first-time parents who will have to plan for a baby shower, but to those who have a child or two already. After all, not everything can be carried over and in most cases some serious shopping is in order.

One of the major purchases that is always under consideration is what type of stroller to buy. Things considered range from colors and trim, to safety and functional features and most parents find themselves overlooking a cheap umbrella stroller and instead focus on the comfy “travel system” style strollers which often come complete with an infant car seat.

While these feature-rich stroller designs are all the rage, many parents report that their appeal quickly wanes once baby reaches the age of nine to twelve months. This is due mostly to the fact that these strollers tend to be large and take up a lot of space, even when collapsed for storage, and not because the little one has outgrown it. Large strollers often make it difficult to fit anything else in a car’s trunk if it is present and large strollers, if stowed in the back seat, normally dominate all the space available.

This is why many parents begin looking for a lightweight stroller that is both functional and convenient at the same time and soon find themselves seeking out a classic Umbrella Stroller that is better suited to meeting their family’s overall travel needs.

While the basic design of the Umbrella Stroller has been around for almost 40 years, baby equipment manufacturers like Maclaren, Chicco, Combi, and Cosco have introduced lightweight strollers that are feature rich but still offer the convenience and storage options of the original.

You can now find umbrella strollers equipped with reclining seats, thermo-insulated handles, handbrakes, and more. For those who have more than one young child manufacturers have introduced a double umbrella stroller design and even a triple stroller that, while larger, still adheres to the spirit of the original.

Once folded down, the umbrella stroller takes up very little trunk space. It also settles nicely on the floor of most rear passenger seats or even under the rear bench of a crew-cab style pickup truck. Most are super-simple to setup and can be taken from the trunk and be ready to go in under 15 seconds.

Over the years, the looks of the umbrella stroller has evolved as well. Well chosen colors and patterns are better matched to the aluminum frame components making the entire package safer, stronger, and more trendy than the models of yester-year.

All of these facts combined mean that most parents are quick to make their umbrella stroller their primary means of couriering baby soon after getting one and as it often stays in use well after a child is two years old, it can get quite a bite more mileage that it’s fancier travel system cousin.

While many moms and dads choose to wait until baby has grown a bet before switching to an umbrella stroller, it often makes sense to plan a little further out in the future and get one early on.

This is doubly true if you are going to be having a baby shower as many moms forget to add an umbrella stroller to the baby registry from the get-go. Most veteran parents will agree that having an umbrella stroller on hand is more important than a humidifier or a bottle warmer, yet they fail to tell the newly expecting mother this important little fact.

While this lack of foresight causes many new parents to miss out on the chance to add this essential piece of baby gear into the mix early on, it also deprives family and friends of the opportunity to give mom, dad, and baby a gift that will get real use over the coming years.

So if you are going to be a new parent, a new grandparent, aunt or uncle, make sure that you take a second look at the handy and fashionable umbrella stroll…even if someone forgot to add it to the registry.

While raising three children in Michigan, Brian and Christina Kurtz discovered how convenient an umbrella stroller was to have around. To see for yourself the many full-featured lightweight stroller designs at the best prices available, you can visit http://www.UmbrellaStrollerShop.com

Learn How To Get Your 4-Legged Baby Used To Baby

If your four-legged first child has a wet nose and gives sloppy kisses, he may need some help adjusting to baby number two.

It may surprise you to know that your pet may have been the first to notice that there was a change in you at the beginning of your pregnancy. Pets are very in tune with their owners and can sense when things have changed. They will notice the change in hormone levels with an owner that they are really attached to. They may not understand what is actually happening and it is our role to make the adjustment a positive experience.

It’s common for pets to become more affectionate during your pregnancy. This positive attitude should carry on into baby’s arrival. In most cases it is estimated that about 98% of dogs will get along with a baby. There are a few dogs that will not get along and if you are in any doubt, you should seek the expertise of a dog trainer.

Still, there is plenty you can do on your own to get your pet adjusted to the baby yourself. The key is the introduction.

* Give your pet a chance to be well behaved when your baby comes home.
* Set up the nursery and put baby items around your home before your delivery so that they are familiar things to your pets.
* If anything in your pet’s routine is going to be different after baby’s birth, such as where they are to fed or where they will sleep, make the changes before the birth.
* Send your partner home with a cap or blanket that smells like your baby if time permits, and have him hold it while your pet sniffs the item.
* If your pet has annoying habits like excessive barking, resolve the issues before the baby arrives.
* A dog that is trained to obey basic voice commands is an easier dog to control when you’re busy with your baby.
* Dogs who get nervous around new people should be conditioned to ease their anxiety toward strangers. Try rewarding your dog when he meets new people and it goes well, even having the strangers hand him the treats. There is a lot of excitement when you first walk in the door with your new baby and this is not the ideal time to introduce your pet to the new arrival. Your pet may be worked up about your return so give him a chance to settle down and reconnect with you first.

Like people, pets need to feel loved and secure. Giving attention to both baby and pets simultaneously is very effective in showing pets that they are not being neglected or outranked. Having your partner or other sibling give attention to your dog while sitting beside you and the baby, then trading is a good way to use this technique.

The key is remembering your pets. Continue to snuggle with your dog and pet your cat. Don’t put them on the back burner because the family has changed. They serve a great purpose, so don’t forget them during this exciting time in your life.

One Size Diapers, Go Green

When it comes to diapering baby you’re going to have a few choices, disposable, the old-fashioned fluf up cloth diapers, or the newest in diapering fashion, cloth pre-made one size diapers which are reusable.

Many consumers have become a little bit concerned of the use of disposable diapers. Not only does it create a lot of waste, but it also creates emissions through manufacturing. Those parents who have opted to go green are now using a variety of different styles of reusable diapers.

These reusable diapers are often made up of, fleas, or other fabrics, are washable, grow with your child, and are made to last for generations

As you can imagine as the child grows those disposable diapers can become quite the garbage pile. Yes, you probably have garbage service that takes it out every week, but it still must be disposed of. Also, the plastics in the interior of these types of diapers do create emissions from manufacturing. If you’re concerned about going green, you do have options.

Reusable diapers are those that are made of cloth fabrics of one sort or another. They’re often size for newborns through toddler’s, or come as a one-size-fits-all. They have fastenings such as buttons, snaps, or possibly Velcro, and are adjustable to the size of your child.

These one size diapers are easily washed and cleaned. In fact, they create less waste, are completely reusable, can be handed down through the generations, and, have no plastics that can irritate babies skin or create emissions during manufacturing and disposal.

You’ll find that these diapers come in a wide array of fabrics and styles. In other words, you’re bound to find them in a style you enjoy. Often, sold on the Internet or through auction sites, you can actually find these types of diapers used. Just make sure you thoroughly clean them before using them, but you can save quite a bit of money by purchasing used cloth diapers.

On top of that, parents have become innovative as well. They now have diaper covers that can actually protect your furniture and babies clothes from soiling. These diaper covers or also reusable, come in a variety of fabrics and styles, and, you can find them used.

When it comes to choosing the type of diapers you’re going to use for your baby, try to think a little bit green. By using reusable diapers such as those that are one-size-fits-all, you can hand them down, use them for other children, sell them on the Internet, and of course, are being green at the same time.

There is no doubt that disposable diapers can be a handy thing to have around, and there’s nothing wrong for using them for those traveling days. But as a rule, try to think about the environment when it comes to caring for your newborn child. Look to reusable cloth diapers that are possibly one-size-fits-all, and save a little bit of the planet while you make your child more comfortable

Baby Sleep Secrets You May Not Have Heard About

Have you brought home a little nocturnal critter from the hospital? Following a few simple and surprising tricks can help to keep everyone rested, rational and sleeping through the night as soon as possible.

TOO TIRED TO SLEEP
For the first 6 months of life, babies need and average of 13 hours of sleep each night. Don’t be fooled into thinking that skipping a nap will mean a longer and better night’s sleep. It could mean just the opposite. An over-tired baby can have a difficult time settling down at night. What’s worse, an exhausted infant often suffers from a more fitful sleep, with more waking throughout the night, causing a pattern that’s hard to break and pretty unpleasant to manage. So keep to those daily naps-you’ll all be happier for it.

STAY ON TRACK
By engaging with baby in the middle of the night, you are actually telling him that it’s playtime, not sleep time. Instead, let your actions speak the language of sleep during those wee hours. Keep the lights low, avoid eye contact, say little, keep him warm on the changing table with a blanket, and make sure it’s all business. This way, everyone gets back to bed as soon as possible and your baby learns the difference between night and day.

DADDY GETS A TURN
When you are weaning your baby off of late night breastfeeding, send daddy in for a turn at diaper changes. This way, your baby won’t see or smell mommy and think it’s time to eat. It won’t happen right off, but eventually your baby will realize that his dad isn’t equipped for feeding and won’t bother to wake in the night. Having a turn with the night time visits will give dad a chance to step into your slippers.

MAKE SOME NOISE!
As new mommies we often try to keep the household as quiet as possible. What we forget is that baby is already used to plenty of noise from being inside your belly for 40 weeks. All that heart beating, tummy rumbling and water squishing makes for a pretty noisy ride! So don’t shy away from the regular household activities when baby arrives. Plus, if your little one becomes accustomed to sleeping in a perfectly quiet house, you’ll be tiptoeing around until she turns 18!

WAKE A SLEEPING BABY?
Once your baby develops a regular sleep pattern and you’re ready to try to lengthen your nighttime snooze, introduce a top-off feeding. Gently wake your baby before you go to bed, around 10 or 11 pm. This last feeding is likely to keep him satisfied during your actual sleeping hours.

COOLER IS BETTER
No matter what you think, don’t overdress your baby for bedtime and don’t turn up the heat either. The ideal sleeping temperature for a sleeping baby is between 65 and 69 degrees. If you overheat the room, you risk unnecessary waking and potential danger of SIDS. If covers are necessary, try a sleeping sack.

Don’t get attached to any one method of getting your baby to sleep. It’s inevitable that just as soon as everyone finds a happy pattern, he will begin teething or catch a cold, and then it’s try, try again!

Solve Your Hemorrhoid Hell Today!

If like me, you’ve tried the many different types of haemorrhoid products, you’ll know just how frustrating and fruitless this can be. I am going to cover the three most popular options, how they work, what they’re supposed to do for your haemorrhoids or piles and the truth about what they really do!

My first and last experience with these horrible little things began when I was pregnant with my third baby. Pregnancy and haemorrhoids often go hand in hand, although this is far from the only way you can get them! Lets look at three common ways people deal with this frustrating and uncomfortable problem.

The first one we will cover are pills. This is not an option for me. I avoid taking drugs of any kind if I can help it. However many people go this route and often have no option. You can take pills to regulate blood pressure in your system and while this option can have a lot of side-effects, these blood pressure regulating pills work to tighten the vein tissue so that you are less susceptible to haemorrhoid problems. To me this is an extreme option because they have real side-effects and big pharmaceutical companies like to push these solutions because they make lots of money from them even though the possible side-effects often far outweigh any possible benefits in my opinion.

Secondly, the most popular are probably creams and ointments. A topical cream is applied onto your anus and rectum and supposedly soothes the blood vessels. This helps to relax the tissue therefore the haemorrhoids don’t bulge out as much. A a result they are supposedly less likely to appear. While this provides temporary relief, unfortunately, you are pretty much guaranteed that they’ll come back.

The third and last option we will cover is also very popular and this is the use of suppositories! You take the suppository and insert it inside the rectum. This aims to moisturize the haemorrhoid thereby creating a lubricating effect once pressure is felt in the rectum. The aim of this is to heal it without it rupturing again. It works well for some but for others it is not even an option as it is quite graphic and a lot of people just can’t cope with the procedure.

These three ways of dealing with haemorrhoids are the most common but all too often, they ultimately provide little relief and certainly not long term relief. The extreme end of the scale is to try surgery, but this depends entirely on how severe your individual case is and what you are prepared to go through in order to find relief.

Thankfully all is not lost! There is a solution that is not only safe, but is a 100% natural remedy and has proven results from hundreds, if not thousands of happy haemorrhoid survivors. This fantastic method has everything you need to cure your haemorrhoids once and for all!

Diaper Covers Make Great Gifts

When it comes to shopping for a new member of the family that you’re close to it often is expected that you should purchase a gift for the new arrival. Diaper covers come in a variety of different types of sizes, and cereals. One of the nice gifts you can get for the parents of a new child is diaper covers. These diaper covers actually cover disposable diapers and cloth diapers, and come in a variety of fabrics and designs.

Basically, a diaper cover is some sort of fabric that has been sewn together in the shape of a pair of large panties for a child in diapers. They either pull up over top of the diaper, wraparound the diaper and use Velcro, buttons, or other attachments, and often come in a wide assortment of fabrics styles.

Whether the parent is using disposable diapers or cloth diapers, the diaper covers come in handy. They’re reusable, so all the parent has to do is throw them in the wash and they come out sparkling clean to be used over and over again.

There are many places you can get diaper covers, you can shop online, check the secondhand stores, or purchase them at your regular department stores. Almost everyone understands what diaper covers are, so finding them isn’t difficult. Also, the fact that they come in so many different sizes, designs and fabrics make them extremely useful

They also come in separate sizes, and this means if you’re looking for something for an larger toddler, you can find diaper covers for them as well. Newborn diaper covers are going to be very small, , they are reusable, so the parents can either hang onto them for the next child, or put them online for sale. Either way you look at it, getting a few diaper covers in a variety of sizes for parents is a great idea and something they’ll enjoy.

When shopping online for diaper covers you’ll find there’s such a wide assortment it can be hard to choose. You’ll find that they come in different types of fabrics such as fleece, cotton, and even those that are plastic on the outside and soft fabric on the inside. Also, you’ll find a come in a variety of colors, parents often like the Velcro styles because they’re so adjustable.

You can also make your own types of diaper covers very easily and quickly. You’ll find patterns for those on the Internet as well. Basically they’ll be shaped similar to a large pair underwear. You’ll then line them with something absorbent, and line the outside with a thicker threaded material. The point of a diaper cover is to keep a wet diaper from soiling a child’s clothes or possibly ruining the furniture.

Diaper covers are great gift idea, and you’ll find them all over. Remember, children grow, so purchasing several different sizes is a good idea. Also, many parents like to match the outfit of the day with the diaper cover, so be variety of basic colors can also be nice.

The Eight Principles of Attachment Parenting

In recent years, as our culture makes efforts to return back to “the natural,” a relatively new philosophy has taken hold among mothers with young children, with its focus heavily emphasizing the treatment of infants and toddlers. It is called “attachment parenting,” and it stems from attachment theory in the field of developmental psychology.

The fundamental outcome which attachment parenting strives to achieve is that a child’s “secure attachment”–or sufficiently strong bond–to parents, particularly the mother, will ultimately lead to healthy, fulfilling relationships in adulthood.

What follows is a series of principles which are meant to help parents create said secure attachment. Those principles are as follows (first lines taken from the official Attachment Parenting International website):

1. Prepare for pregnancy, birth, and parenting. This is essentially self-explanatory. Get yourself educated about local healthcare facilities and the birthing environments available. If this is your first child, then familiarize yourself with newborn care. Read up. Ask questions. Set realistic expectations for yourself, your family, and your baby.

Many mothers who practice attachment parenting prefer to give birth naturally, even at home. If this sounds appealing to you, then investigate using a midwife or doula.

2. Feed with love and respect. Parents who follow attachment theory believe that breastfeeding is the ideal way for infants and even toddlers to receive primary nutrition. Children should be taught to make healthy food selections from the earliest stages of weaning. Parents should make it a priority to set the example for healthy behaviors.

3. Respond with sensitivity. Both parents should make efforts to react immediately to either a crying or a laughing child. Even infants have something to communicate, and each parent should take time to discern what that is and respond accordingly.

4. Use nurturing touch. Parents should use physical contact, particularly skin-to-skin, to communicate love, affection, and a sense of security. This is important as an ongoing practice, not isolated to infancy. Many parents, whether using “AP,” principles or not, have gotten into “babywearing.” AP parents believe that this creates a sense of security in the child while you are on the go.

5. Ensure safe sleep, physically and emotionally. Many AP parents practice co-sleeping; this means that the child sleeps in bed with his or her parents. Even when this is not done, it means that parents are continually attentive to the child’s needs while he or she is sleeping, including feeding during the night, checking to see the child is not too cold or too hot, and so on.

6. Provide consistent and loving care. Ideally, one parent will stay at home to continually nurture the attachment relationship. However, if this is not possible, then care should be provided by someone active in the family’s life who can give the child one-on-one attention, not a disinterested daycare provider.

7. Practice positive discipline. Efforts should be made by parents not to react to behavior but instead discover the root cause of behaviors. AP parents tend to believe that bad behaviors are a result of unmet needs. Rewarding good behaviors rather than punishing bad ones will create a more loving home environment.

8. Strive for balance in personal and family life. Remember to take time and recharge your batteries. Seek to handle stress in a positive way, and put your family first. If you get overwhelmed, you will not be able to respond sensitively to your children.

Attachment parenting as a whole philosophy isn’t for everyone, and the principles can sometimes be very inflexible. But there are no rules that say that you can’t take the parts that you like and apply them to your own parenting style.

Anxiety Disorder in Children: Why Treatment is Necessary

Thirty years ago, children who balked at going to school were assumed to be unmotivated and lazy. Most parents assumed that their children had a “bad attitude” about school and that they would somehow grow out of it. Psychologists are now re-evaluating school phobia as an anxiety disorder that warrants early treatment and intervention.

Why Treatment is Necessary

Experts are urging parents to be aware of anxiety symptoms in children so that the disorder can be treated early. Studies suggest that failure to identify the disorder and begin treatment leads to poor performance in schools, increased anxiety, depression and substance abuse later in life.

Anxiety disorder may prevent children from “bonding” with school life; it may also prevent children from participating in activities that are developmental milestones for their age group. Avoiding social situations in school and elsewhere may lead to fewer opportunities for children to develop social skills necessary for success in adult life.

What Kinds of Treatment Options are Available

A major research on treatment options for anxiety in children has been conducted at seven medical institutions across USA. What was significant about this study was its goal to compare different treatment options in children and teens diagnosed with anxiety disorders.

These options were a) the use of antidepressant medication, b) cognitive behavior therapy and c) a combination of both treatments.

According to this study involving 488 children( 7-17 years old), over a 12 week period, 81% of children improved with the combination treatment while 60 % improved with psychotherapy treatment, which in this study was cognitive behavior therapy, a specific therapy that helps children face and manage their fears.

55% improved with antidepressant medication. In this study, the antidepressant used was sertraline (Zoloft), a selective serotonin uptake inhibitor (SSRI). SSRIs are designed to increase serotonin levels in the brain cells.

A placebo group that was used as control, 24% improved. Results of the study also show that all treatments are safe.

The fact that all three treatments are effective provides parents with options and choices. Cognitive Behavior Therapy combined with lifestyle changes can have dramatic impact on anxiety disorders in children. SSRIs are designed to increase serotonin levels in the brain cells. What Parents Can Do

If your child consistently complains of an upset stomach or physical pains before school, you should make an appointment with your physician. Voice your concern and seek professional advice.

Your child could also behave in a fidgety, clinging manner for an extended period of time. If this behavior interferes with school attendance and performance, schedule an appointment with your doctor.

Recognizing Symptoms of Infant Colic

Are you wondering if your baby is showing symptoms of colic? We all know that it is normal for babies to cry but how do you tell if your baby is colicky or if it’s just normal crying?

If you are a first time mother, taking care of a newborn can be a challenge. It’s a new experience and there are many things to learn. It can also be confusing as you try to pick up on your baby’s cues. The only way a baby can communicate is through crying. So, when your baby cries a lot and you don’t know the reason why, you get worried. You wonder what could be wrong or if you have missed something. When the crying gets too much, the idea that maybe you have a colicky baby crosses your mind. But you don’t want to jump to conclusions. You are afraid that by blaming the crying on colic, you may actually be overlooking a serious condition.

So, what are the symptoms of colic?
If you ask a doctor, they will base their diagnosis on “the rule of threes”. Meaning, if your baby is healthy but cries non-stop for three or more hours per day, for three or more days per week and for a minimum of three weeks, they will call it colic. There are other tell-tale signs such as a flushed face, clenched fists, restlessness, and baby continually draws up the legs and kicks. The stomach will feel hard. Often the crying is worse towards the evening. Baby colic usually starts when baby is 3-4 weeks old. You can expect it to subside when baby is around 3 months old.

If you ask a parent that has survived colic, they will tell you that the cry of colic is very distinct. There will be no mistaking it for anything else. The cry is high pitched, intense, inconsolable and it will drive you crazy. You won’t even call it crying. It will sound more like screaming and you will get the impression that baby is in a lot of pain.

When is it NOT colic?
Your baby’s crying is not colic when you can identify the reason for the crying. In other words, baby is crying because he is hungry, cold, hot, uncomfortable, needs a change, tired, needs to burp or wants to be held; and baby stops crying when you meet those needs. It is also NOT colic if baby’s crying sessions end within 30 minutes.

Colic does not indicate an illness. It’s a term given to healthy babies that cry excessively for no reason. So do not say it’s colic if baby has fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or rashes. Visit the doctor immediately. You also need to be concerned if baby doesn’t feed well and his level of alertness drops.

If your baby is showing signs of colic and you have run out of ideas on how to make the crying stop, you need to learn the secret to Curing Colic. You don’t have to remain helpless and frustrated. Check out what these colic baby remedies can do for you.

Is Rock Band Suitable For My Children?

Not so long ago it was unimaginable that a video game would allow your kids and a small band of friends to become rock gods in the comfort of the living room with nothing more than a plastic drum kit and guitar and a few hours of practice. But now, thanks to Harmonix they can.

Rock Band is currently rated at number six in the world Xbox 360 games chart despite fierce competition and a price tag of more than one hundred pounds. That in itself goes some way to explain just how popular this game is (particularly in the 14-20+ age range). Similar music and rhythm video games have been around for quite some time but never before has one slipped into the mainstream quite like Rock Band.

Similar in principle to the dance-mat based games your children may have previously owned, Rock Band simply involves pressing a series of coloured buttons in the correct order in time to a pre-recorded track. Sounds simple doesn’t it? Simple it may be but its simplicity only adds to the fun. Easy to learn, fun to watch as well as play and (apparently) good for hand eye co-ordination, games like this are certainly preferable to the violence-laden ’shoot-em-ups’ which attract so much negative press.

Out of the box, your little rock stars will have access to 72 ‘core songs’ many of which you may recognise. Aware of the family market the game’s manufacturers have been reasonably careful to ensure swear words and inappropriate lyrics don’t appear. No doubt this will come as somewhat of a relief to some parents concerned about what their children are listening to. Fear not parents, rock and roll has been domesticated for the 21st century.

There are also over 550 songs available for download. These downloads cost real money and to download them your kids will need wither a credit/debit card or pre-paid Microsoft points card (preferable for parents wishing to keep an eye on their children’s spending). When you consider the sheer amount of tracks to play along to and the amount of equipment that comes with Rock Band (drum kit, guitar and microphone) the price tag makes much more sense.

Downloadable songs are available from a myriad of current artists ranging from Oasis to Fall Out Boy with everything in between. Tracks can be bought individually or in packs which collect songs by the same artist or of a similar genre. Parents who wait until the kids have gone to bed to have a sneaky play on their games consoles will be pleased to see names such as AC/DC and The Smashing Pumpkins amongst the downloadable songs.

The game’s longevity is further enhanced by having difficulty levels ranging from easy (best for clumsy fathers) to expert (a daunting onslaught of coloured icons only readable by the most hardened players). Medium and hard difficulty options make sure that those whose skill level sits somewhere between total beginner and Hendrix are also well catered for.

The recently released sequel, imaginatively titled Rock Band 2, features 84 new tracks, 20 free downloads and the library of 500+ songs previously available has been further expanded and improved.

Rock Band may well be slightly expensive for a video game but if your child has a birthday coming up it’s certainly worth considering. It’s a game the whole family can play, the downloadable songs ensure the kids will be playing for ages and it features none of the violence or adult themes that are all too common in modern games.

A Guide To Your Pregnancy Calendar

Pregnancy is such an incredible time for a woman in her life and once she discovers she is pregnant it is very useful to set up a pregnancy calendar so that you know exactly how your baby is developing and to understand what you need to be considering for the best interest of your baby. Here in this article we will look briefly at how a baby develops throughout each trimester much like a pregnancy calendar would. There are many calendars available online full of helpful information for first time mothers and those who would like to understand about the growth of a baby within the womb.

The first trimester is the first 12 weeks into your pregnancy and you will begin to notice changes to your body. The bump will not show into the second trimester, however hormonal changes will make your energy levels feel lower and possibly give you morning sickness. By the sixth week of pregnancy the embryo is grey and jelly like but has a heart the size of a tiny seed that beats independently. By nine weeks the embryo looks very human and fingers and toes are almost complete, by twelve weeks all major organs will have formed and your baby’s placenta will have become fully functional.

By the second trimester you will have probably begun to show and will be feeling a lot better, the greatest risk of miscarriage will have passed. Your pregnancy calendar will advise you to start making decisions about scans and where you actually want to give birth to your baby. By the end of your second trimester your baby will look very human and if your baby was born now it would be possible for your baby to survive should she be born prematurely. Your baby will be able to grip with her hands and wiggle her toes within the womb.

Once you reach the final trimester the relationship with your baby will have become closer as you will have become familiar with their movements and sleeping patterns within the womb. Your baby is laying down fat stores at this point and her lungs will be strengthening in preparation for birth. The baby can tell the difference between night and day and she can recognise your voice. By the final part, 36 to 38 weeks you baby has grown to 18 inches and weighs about 6 pounds, the growth will not be as rapid now but will continue to gain weight at about 250 g a week. By this point you can start preparations for birth and a plan for when you go into labour.

Finding the Right Nanny and Finding the Right Family

Mary Poppins is the most famous nanny in the world, but aside from flying over rooftops, nannies are a major global business. Historically, nurses were probably the first nannies, hired as live-in custodians to care for the children of the household. Nannies assist parents in raising their children acting in a sense, as a surrogate parent, which was the principle function then as it is now. A nanny is a consistent caregiver and is essential in a child’s formative years when the parents cannot be at home.

Today, a nanny position has evolved into a profession that requires credentials, education, training, and certification. A nanny is no longer a glorified baby sitter, but a profession that commands a respectable salary that can pay from $400-$800 plus a week or $40,000 plus per year. Some nanny positions include doing light housework, laundry, shopping and preparing meals. As the list of duties expands, so should the salary.

There are a number of nanny training schools for teaching and obtaining all necessary certifications. The schools usually provide nanny placement services so once the nanny graduates, she can find employment through the alma mater.

Here are some placement requirements that a nanny needs:

-Graduate from an ACNS (American Council of Nanny Schools) approved Nanny School,
-Teacher/Nurse
-Certified Early Childhood Education (2 or 4 year program)
-Experienced child care provider with comparable education in child development, nutrition, health and psychology and a minimum of one year childcare experience.

Additional references include:

-Five references, four must be childcare related
-First Aid/CPR Certification
-A good driving record
-No criminal record
-Verification of good health
-Ability to give a one year commitment

Parents
Finding the right nanny can be an overwhelming and exhausting experience. Probably the best approach for novice parents is to find a nanny through a placement agency. The best place to look for placement is through a good nanny school. The advantage is, the school knows its students and can easily pick candidates that would match a household.

Here are some tips for parents looking for the right nanny:

-Check credentials and certifications from school.
-Great personality that fits parents’ and the children.
-Good communication skills for parents and children.
-Does the nanny’s philosophy on discipline coincide with the parents?

It is advisable to work with ACNS approved schools and placement agencies for good results. This is not a hard, fast rule but it is a great starting point for parents who are starting to do their research.

Sunscreen Safety - How to Keep Your Littles Ones Skin Protected This Summer

Summer has definitely arrived, and with it, many Sun Safety concerns as well. The biggest concern by far with children is the importance of sunscreen. When is the best time to apply sunscreen? What SPF should I use? How often do I need to reapply sunscreen? These questions along with a few others will be answered in this article.

With so many activities to participate in with the good ole sunshine involved, it is a good idea to brush up on some Sun Safety tips before packing the gang off to the pool, park, zoo, soccer practice or simply playing in the sprinklers.

Sun screen is the easiest and probably most important safety concern to tackle. While there are a vast variety of brands and SPF’s to choose from, just remember this: almost ANY sunscreen is better than no sunscreen! As a general rule, though, the younger the child, the higher the SPF number should be.

Don’t underestimate the strength of the morning sun. Even on a pleasant morning, the sun’s ability to burn is very powerful. A cloudy day can be deceiving too. While the risk of sun damage is much less when there is cloud cover, tender skin is still at risk in this weather. Apply sunscreen after arriving at your destination as to avoid it being rubbed off on the child’s car seat, clothing, blankets, etc.

A very helpful hint for applying sunscreen to wiggly and impatient toddlers who cannot wait to dive into the fun is to purchase a sunscreen that has a spray bottle applicator. If the sunscreen that you swear by is thin enough, you can easily put it in a spray bottle yourself. The spray effect provides a very easy application, with not much “rubbing in” required and can cover a pretty good sized area quickly. The convenience of the spray is that older kids can apply their own and help get younger kids ready as well. Don’t be conservative when applying the protection; in this case, less is definitely not more.

Looking in to the SPF factor is simple. The higher the number listed, i.e., 45 SPF or even 60 SPF, the more sun damage protection the lotion provides. A very young baby or child has more sensitive skin that burns very easily. Even 15 minutes in the sun can cause a painful burn. So the first priority to arriving in a sunny spot is to first, protect that sensitive young skin. The older and more active your child is, the more often you will need to reapply the sunscreen.

For example, if your son is at soccer practice and sweating, his sunscreen is being removed quicker. A child being pushed in a stroller won’t be rubbing the protection off as fast. An easy trick to keeping the sun’s damage away is to get your kids to wear a sun visor or hat. This will help to keep the direct rays of the sun off their cheeks and out their eyes. If you can manage to keep them on your child, sunglasses can be a very helpful source of protection against glare.

However you choose to spend your summer hours with your kids, be sure to keep them protected from the sun with a hat, visor or umbrella, but most importantly, protect their soft, young skin with sunscreen. Besides protecting your tots with the sunscreen, you will have a great opportunity to cuddle up when rubbing it in!

What is the Connection between Nutrition and Child Behavior?

We are what we eat. Moreover we need to be more careful about what we put in our children’s mouths. Studies have shown that we have reason to be concerned about the relationship between food and behavior.

Our food is depleted of nutrients because of changes in agricultural practices adopted in the seventies. What we eat is contaminated by additives. We also tend to over process our food, thus further depleting it of nutrients.

First, changes in agricultural practices have changed the nature of our food. In his book, “Anticancer: A New Way of Life,” Dr. Servan-Schreiber locates the paucity of omega fatty 3 acids in our modern diet in the dietary changes of our modern cows. Grass pastures are naturally rich in omega 3’s. The replacement of grass pastures with battery farming in the seventies has changed our cattle feed from grass to a mixture of corn, soy and wheat which are wholly devoid of omega 3 fatty acids.

Battery farming has literally taken omega 3 out of the human food chain. Research has shown that children with ADHD have lower concentrations of omega 3, specifically DHA in their bodies, a situation that has already been linked with an increased risk of depression and brain deterioration.

Researchers have also linked the doubling of fatty tissues in children between 1970 and 1990 to the change in the character of milk coming from corn fed cows.

Second, most of us are unaware of the added components in our food like emulsifiers, preservatives, thickeners and additives. According to Dr. Janet Starr Hull, there are over 14,000 man-made chemicals added to the American food supply today.

Children are the most vulnerable victims because they are often fed these additives from infancy. What many people do not realize is that these chemicals can produce a host of different reactions in different people. Most studies on food additives have been done on separate and individual items.

The safety of one item does not guarantee the safety of the product in which multiple additives are combined. Certain combinations can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive children; others may not be affected at all.

Third, our modern food processing procedures strip foods of important nutrients. Commercially grown vegetables have been stripped of 87% of their nutrients. Refined white flour, for example, has only 2 or 3 nutrients while unbleached whole wheat flour has more than 60.

Foods processed in cans are heated at high temperatures. What this means is that natural enzymes are destroyed. In our modern culture, we do not eat enough raw foods which are filled with natural, life supporting enzymes.

We need to become more conscious of whole foods cooked at home: bread baked with unbleached whole wheat flour without additives, soups and salads made with organically grown fresh garden tomatoes and greens harvested not weeks ago, but moments ago.

We have traded the immediacy of “live”foods for convenience and we have contaminated our children with a culture of food allergies and sensitivities. ADHD and various behavior orders in children are on the rise. We can change this situation by returning our children to whole foods that are free from chemicals and additives.

Does Your Teenager Think That You Are Only There To Serve Them

If you are like most parents, you have probably always done anything you can for your children ever since they were born. You want them to know from the beginning that they can come to you with any problem any time and that you will do what ever you can. As they grow older and become teenagers, they might have come to depend on you for too much and possibly even take you for granted. Some teens know they have good parents and they will use this to their advantage as much as possible. At some point in the life of a teenager, you have to learn to make them step up and learn to take responsibility for their own life.

When a child has had a mother, father, or both that has never made a child be responsible for anything, even cleaning their own room, this can turn into a problem by the time they hit twelve or thirteen. When a kid is this age, they need to have some chores because this teaches them that you can not do everything for them and they have a responsibility to take part in keeping their household running if they want to live there. Continuing to always pick up after them instead of making them do it their selves, might make them think that they are staying in a hotel with a full line of service just for them to use.

Before a teenager starts driving themselves, they might assume that you are their personal chauffeur. This is especially true if your teen already has an active social life. They might want to be involved in so many activities that you can not keep up with them. This can be a good thing if it keeps your teen out of trouble and you want them to have a lot of friends, but not if it is going to run you ragged. When it gets to the point that you can not even plan any activities of your own because you feel like your on driving duty 24/7 for your teenager, it might be time to set some ground rules until they start driving themselves and there will need to be some restrictions in place even after they do start driving on their own.

One problem that many parents run into with teens is disrespect. When they do not get what they want, many times they will get a really smart mouth. Sometimes there does not even have to be an issue at hand for them to spout off at you. They are trying their adult feeling wings of course, you just have to let them know that there is a line that they should not think they are old enough to cross. When they start telling you no and even worse, shut up, it is past time to let them know that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated. Often teens do this because they believe you will not or can not do anything about it. Never let your child bully you and take your control. This is one sure way to end up with an adult child that will continue to try and walk all over you even later in life. You want a good relationship with your teen, but you do not want to be their doormat either.

Finding The Right Balance Of Being A Friend And A Parent to Your Teen

Usually a couple that marries will decide when it is time to have children and they look forward to the arrivals of their babies so much. Of course, there are also plenty of times when people are not married and an unplanned pregnancy comes along and changes your life when it was not exactly what you had in mind. Sometimes people adopt a baby or a child when they can not have any of their own. Then there are blended families when the person you choose to be your mate has children that are brought into the relationship in the very beginning. Either way, these children are in your life, you are the parent or stepparent, and they are going to start growing up and will eventually become the dreaded teenager.

The word teenager can strike fear into the minds of a parent because it is well known that problems can up that will difficult and confusing to deal with. Most normal parents want desperately to have a good relationship with their teenagers, but it can be hard to allow them to grow up because you have a protective fear for them. Usually, parents learn how to let go a little at a time and when they are lucky they can trust their teen to be responsible and do the right things. That is not nearly always the case because sometimes the last thing a teenager wants to be is responsible. They want to grow up too quickly and be able to their own thing whether you approve or not.

Some teens are more rebellious than others. When you have one that has a tendency to get in trouble and be untrustworthy, it can make your life a nightmare. They might shrug off any curfew you give them and you could end up being that parent sitting up in the chair late at night wondering where they are and if you should call the police or go out looking for them yourself. Then there are other parents that will allow this kind of behavior because they are so afraid of making their teen mad at them, they will give them free reign to do whatever they like because they want to be their friend as well as the parent.

It is a fine line that parents have to walk between being the parent or being a friend and sometimes you just can not be both. If you can have a good relationship with your teenager and be a friend to them as well as their parent, that is great, but it can be hard to do this. When it comes right down to it and you are forced to make the choice, you have to be the parent first and the friend second. When you know they are making choices that can cause real problems in their life, now or later on, you have to step up and be the bad guy as distasteful as it might be for you. They might hate you for the moment, but that is better than allowing them to make mistakes that can affect the rest of their life.

Do Cloth Diapers Really Save Time and Money?

If you are thinking about reusable nappies, you may consider organic cloth diapers as an option. There are many brands that make quality products. Bum Genius are an example, or Thirsties, Happy Heiny’s and many others. All in one fitted diaper that are made in an adjustable size so that you can continue to use them as your baby grows from newborn to toddler stage.

There are many good reasons to choose a reusable nappy over disposable varieties. One of the most important reasons is the environmental impact. Huge resources are used to produce a single disposable nappy. They contain non renewable tree products and also non degradable petroleum products and other plastics.

Although cotton reusable nappies attract their own environmental considerations, greater amounts of energy go into the production of each disposable than the production of each reusable. For example, when you buy a pack of reusable diapers, you buy the packaging it is sold in once. For disposables you are continually buying packaging as well as nappies.

Disposable nappies are used once and then thrown away. Disposing of nappies is quite energy consuming in itself. They have to be moved from the place of last use, like the home, to the landfill site. This movement usually requires storing in more non renewable packaging such as garbage bags. Disposable nappies account for around 50% of waste produced by family with a baby that regularly wears them. This means that double the amount of work has to be done by waste collecting companies to clear that household’s waste than a similar size family with no babies.

Once disposable nappies have been removed from their last place of use, they have to be deposited somewhere. That somewhere is usually landfill sites where the billions thrown away each year account for an alarming percentage of landfill content. The obnoxious cocktail of plastics, chemicals, wood pulp and excrement will sit in a landfill site for at least several generations although no-one knows exactly how long they will take to biodegrade if indeed they ever will. Attempts to recycle disposable diapers have proved too complex and massively cost ineffective to be consistently viable.

Disposable diapers contain huge amounts of chemicals. Many of them have been associated with skin irritations and allergies. Some chemicals are implicated as cancer causing carcinogenic compounds. Others are thought to have negative impacts on future male fertility due to their scrotum heating properties. Anyone who tries to avoid over exposure to unnatural chemicals will definitely want to steer clear of most brands of disposable nappies.

It makes sense to go for the reusable nappy option if cost control is important to you. Reusable nappies can cost quite a bit in the initial outlay. However by the time your child reaches two years old you will have spent approximately $2, 000 on disposables nappies if your child uses this option exclusively. This can be quite a bit more than this depending on whereabouts you live in the world.

The cost of purchasing a set of reusable nappies such as Bum Genius Diapers will calculate to about 30% of this amount even when you include home laundering costs. Reusable nappies are often passed on and are used for 2 or even 3 babies thus enhancing their environmental and financial cost saving benefits.

How To Purchase The Right Car Seat For Your Baby

One of the most important pieces of baby gear that new parents must buy is a car seat. Every state has passed legislation requiring their use in vehicles. At the minimum, babies must be seated in them during their first eighteen months of age. Some states require their use up to three years while others - for example, California - require their use up to a certain weight.

There are a few different types and each is designed for a slightly different purpose. Buying the right one depends upon your needs. Below, we’ll describe the available types and explain how to make the right choice.

An Assortment Of Models

There are 3 categories of car seats: those which are designed for infants, convertible units, and boosters. Models which are designed for infants should be used if your baby is under 12 months in age and weighs under 20 lbs. It should always be positioned within your car facing the rear.

Convertibles can accommodate babies and toddlers that weigh up to 35 lbs. While they’re designed to allow rear-facing or forward-facing positions, you should place the unit in your vehicle to face the rear whenever possible. However, as your baby grows older, it may become less feasible to do so.

Finally, boosters are created for toddlers who have outgrown infant and convertible car seats. The purpose of a booster is to position your child high enough so that your vehicle’s shoulder safety belt can be used effectively. When your toddler reaches nearly 5 feet in height, he will no longer need the booster.

Factors To Consider When Choosing

So, how do you choose the right model? As you may suspect, your choice will depend largely on your baby’s weight, height, and to a lesser extent, age. All of the models that are currently sold in stores have to meet strict safety regulations before being made available to the public. If you’re thinking about purchasing a secondhand unit, especially one that is a few years old, it may not meet current regulations. That is not to suggest that you can’t use it, but retail stores cannot sell it.

Some models come with useful options, such as carrying handles or LATCH installation components. When you purchase one, consider the advantage of having these conveniences. For example, if you own more than one vehicle with the LATCH system installed, you can easily secure your baby’s car seat in both vehicles. And of course, a carrying handle makes transporting your baby much easier than otherwise.

While there are many types of baby gear that are important, a reliable car seat is a necessity. The key is to purchase a model that is designed specifically to accommodate your infant’s weight and height. That way, you can rest assured that his safety is all but guaranteed while you’re on the road.

Is Conceiving a Girl or a Boy by Your Own Choice Possible?

On this issue, the main theory is that you can have a child, depending on the relationship between the day of conception and of ovulation, because the baby’s sex is determined when the sperm fertilizes the egg.

What happens is that the Y sperms, giving rise to a boy, move faster, but are smaller, more delicate, and weaker. They die soon if fertilization does not take place in the early hours after sexual intercourse. By contrast, the X sperms, which give birth to a girl, move slower but are larger, stronger and live longer, therefore endure more waiting for ovulation. Therefore, if you have sex in the days closer to ovulation, the born baby is a male. However, if the intercourse is about 3 or 4 days before ovulation, it is more likely that the resulting child would be a female. The authors of this technique ensure a success rate of 75 to 80%, if you follow these tips to raise specific odds of having a male or a female child:

A boy

You must do everything possible to ensure that fertilization takes place immediately in relation to the day of ovulation.Choose a position that allows a deeper penetration and therefore a more immediate fertilization. That day the husband should not use tight pants or bathe with very hot water because the heat is not good for sperm Y.

A girl

Have sex 3 or 4 days before ovulation.Choose a position that does not allow such a deep penetration and fertilization is therefore slower. The husband can have a hot bath before intercourse.

Regarding the acidity or alkalinity of vagina, experts recommend the following to increase the chances of conceiving a baby of the desired sex:

Male child

Should make the environment more alkaline before sexual intercourse.Have sex the day of ovulation when the vaginal secretions are more alkaline. Before having sex, get a shower with a combination of water and sodium bicarbonate to maintain the alkaline medium.
The wife must first reach the orgasm, because that releases a hormone that makes the medium more alkaline.
For several days before, consume foods that help the alkaline conditions, that is high in sodium and potassium and low in calcium and magnesium.

Female child

Should make more acidic environment before sexual intercourse.Have sex 3 or 4 days before ovulation, when vaginal secretions are more acidic. Before having sex, get a shower with a combination of water and vinegar to keep the medium acidic. The husband must first reach orgasm. For several days before, consume foods that help the acid environment, which is high in calcium and magnesium and low in sodium and potassium.

If you are looking for scientific support, there are techniques of assisted fertilization, which separate the X and Y sperm in the laboratory and with the help of artificial insemination with the sperm of the sex you choose, you can increase the chances of success to about 80% to have a child of the desired result.

Helping Your Daughter Learn To Dress for School

Starting school is an exciting time in a little girl’s life: she’ll make new friends, learn how to study, and develop her skills in a wide variety of areas. It won’t take long before she’ll begin to develop her own ideas about fashion based on what she sees other little girls wear! Some girls take to it right away, while others take a little longer to get “it” right. Here are some ideas on how to help your daughter learn to dress appropriately for school and avoid the battles which may come with it.

– First of all, start with a little talk about why it’s important for her to be clean and look presentable and appropriate when she goes to school. She may beg and beg to be allowed to wear her favorite “Supergirl cape” or pajama bottoms and not understand why these are not good choices for school. Explain that there is a difference between what’s okay to wear at home and what’s okay to wear to school. Wearing dress up or ultra casual apparel is fine when lounging around the house, but it would be a distraction in a school setting.

– Let her do the shopping with you and make as many of her own choices as possible. When your daughter was a baby and toddler, you did all the clothes selections for her: now empower her by giving her more say so. When you visit a department store or shop online, help her to distinguish appropriate school clothes from dressier items. With practice, she’ll eventually be able to make those distinctions herself. Let her choose the colors she likes, and let her choose the styles as well.

Some clothing web sites allow girls to select not only color, but a decoration as well such as a beaded transfer. She can begin to develop her own style without having to sacrifice age-appropriateness or school-appropriateness. Letting her choose within reason will help you avoid power struggles and unnecessary battles.

– Help her to organize her drawers properly so that she will be able to find the right socks or the right pants when she wants them. Then help her to make her clothing selection every evening before school for the first few weeks. Make sure to always prepare the night before: you will both be in too big a hurry to have much patience if you try to do it during the morning rush. After a few weeks of selecting together, let her have a go with doing it herself. If she needs a little more guidance, do so gently and without passing judgment: keep it positive.

Dressing correctly for school doesn’t always come naturally: remember to be as patient as possible and give her as many choices as you can; before you know it, she’ll get the hang of it.

Ideas for Helping Mothers and Daughters Stay Close

You may have dreamed of having a little girl of your own most of your life; now that you have a daughter of your own, you may worry about how to develop a close relationship that will last throughout your lives. No one’s perfect and there is no magic formula. But there are some ways you can develop a sense of belonging to each other which will nurture a love like no other. Here are some ideas.

– Read together. I know everyone’s already told you this, but it’s so very true. There’s really nothing like cuddling up together on a sofa, on a bed, or on a big chair in front of a fireplace and sharing a book. Once you establish that tradition, neither of you will want to give it up because it is so soul-satisfying on so many levels.

Choose books that have great stories: this is not the time to teach her to read or to practice her ABCs; it is a time for forming relationships. Even if she asks you to read the same book over and over, do it. She knows the story by heart but that’s not what matters most to her: what matters is that closeness she feels with you.

– Along the same lines, but a little bit different: have a traditional activity that only the two of you share. If you have multiple children, and even multiple daughters, it is essential that you have something you only do with her and her alone to help her know she is special to you. For example, you may go on a Sunday afternoon walk through the neighborhood together. Do it every week without fail, rain or shine.

As she gets older, it will be during this traditional time with you that she will be most likely to open up and discuss important matters with you. You could go to McDonald’s every Saturday morning for breakfast or play racquetball together every Tuesday: whatever you do, be consistent.

– Make a tradition of having your picture taken together every year on her birthday. You may even want to dress in similar t shirts that you design yourselves so that you match. Set aside a little space on her bedroom wall to hang each photograph as the years go by. She’ll not only see how she’s changing, she’ll also realize that no matter how much she changes you will always be a constant in her life and be there for her.

It takes time and effort to forge strong ties that bind between a mother and a daughter. There will always be ups and down in the relationship and sometimes she may be closer to her father or to her friends that she is to you. But she’ll always remember that you took the time to be with her, and over the long run you both will enjoy that mother/daughter bond that is like no other.

Teething Tips To Soothe Both You and Your Baby

While teething is a natural part of a baby’s development, it can be very painful and uncomfortable. My first baby struggled and my second baby sailed through very easily. You just can’t tell how each individual child will cope. It can be exhausting for you too while this is going on. Feeding and sleep routines get disrupted and add to the frustration of a poor, grumpy baby who cannot communicate verbally.

The first teeth to appear are the bottom front teeth at around six months. The first four front teeth are called incisors and as they are flat in shape, are thought to be less painful when cutting through the gums than the later canines and molars.

The molars or back teeth are next on the list and these start making an appearance at about 12 months. The molars are followed by the canines which are next to the lateral incisors if we are getting technical. This happens between 16 and 18 months. Finally, the appearance of the second molars lag behind, coming in last, from about 18 to 30 months and thankfully these complete the first set of your child’s teeth, otherwise known as the milk teeth.

There are a few symptoms of teething which include general grizzling and very irritable little bundles of joy, or should I say little bundles of irritation! These symptoms pre-empt the arrival of your babies pearly whites. Dribbling and chewing on everything along with flushed cheeks are a definite indication that teeth are on the way. These symptoms can also be accompanied by red, swollen gums.

But, if your baby has a temperature of 38 degrees celcius or diarrhoea, see your doctor as quickly as you can, as these are not symptoms of teething even though they are popularly thought to be!

There are a number of methods you can try to ease this terrible teething pain, a little tender loving care being at the top of my list. However, when you are run off your feet juggling the running of a household, a business, three children and a cat as I am, it is difficult to be 100% in TLC mode. Therefore I would suggest trying teething rings cooled in the fridge, but never frozen mind you, as you can damage their little gums! I also make use of teething gel and teething powder although, for my little tot, teething gel is her preferred method! If a gel is not working discontinue using it. If you can get through it without using any man-made medicine, then all the better for baby and hats off to you!

Why Choose A Nanny Agency?

Choosing a nanny to look after your children is a big decision; you definitely do not want to just invite anyone into your home. That is why it is so important to know what to do and look for when choosing a nanny, doing your homework whilst searching for one is the best advice. The person that you end up hiring will play a large role into your family life but will also be an employee. You need to be certain your nanny’s goals and ideas fit with your own. This article will look at what to do when looking for a nanny.

Before you start your search for a nanny, you need to establish what type of child care that you actually need. Will you need a live in nanny? Will you hire them full or part time? How much is your budget for hiring a nanny? Once you know what your own expectations are you can start placing adverts, but one great way of finding a nanny is through communicating with your friends and family as they may have friends or connections that can find you a recommended child carer.

You need to start with people vouching on the potential nanny’s reliability, honesty, personality and temperament. Start with written references but telephone conversations will be a must. Past experience is very important with a nanny, it will give you piece of mind leaving your child with them and your nanny will be far more confident dealing with your children’s needs. Even if you find a candidate that you think is suitable, keep interviewing many others so that you can see the choices that you have available to you. Ask personal questions during the interview and expect personal questions back so you can work out exactly what you want.

Lastly, a really great idea when looking for a nanny is to go through a nanny agency, they become a mediator between families and nannies and do all initial interviews, background checks and salary negotiations. Using a nanny agency also can have other benefits such as back up services if your regular nanny is ill and you still need the child care. A nanny agency is also useful if there are ever any disputes between you and a nanny, they can act as an objective third party. If you do decide to use a nanny agency then check with many different ones before making a final decision.

Your Pregnant Bottom In A Nutshell

It wasn’t until my third pregnancy that I realised just how uncomfortable your behind could become. Now if you are squeamish or a prude, either stop reading now or get over it! Whilst being pregnant and giving birth are in my opinion, the two most miraculous things one earth, both these experiences really draw you back to basic instincts and the bare bones of the human body and it’s functions.

Much to my horror, not only did my backside become as broad as the Rio Grande, thanks to the oestrogen produced to lay fat onto my hips and thighs in preparation for breastfeeding my baby, but I also experienced the very unpleasant, infamous constipation followed by, even worse, a small haemorroid! This small haemorroid then became a larger one after the intense, purple faced pushing that is necesssary to get your little bundle out into the world. One of my closest friends quite literally burst the blood vessels on her cheeks with the effort!

Luckily for me it disappeared fairly quickly with the help of some aptly named cream given to me by the midwife at the hospital. That is definitely a tube of cream you relegate to the bottom of your sock drawer!

However, both these conditions can be eased during pregnancy by making a few simple changes to your diet.

Do:

Drink more water-this helps to shift toxins and hydrate your body making it easier to shift waste products

Eat more fruit-Pears in particular have a high fibre content, so add one of those a day to your menu

Eat more vegetables-Green leafy vegetables also have a high fibre content and plant fibre is far more effective at making your colon function properly then grain based fibre

Eating cold wholewheat pasta is a very good colon cleanser and with some blanched verggies followed by a pear for dessert, you colon will be much the happier.

Eat more beans-these also have a high fibre content and occassionaly adding a bean salad to your lunch or evening meal can also help things to move along nicely. Bear in mind, introduce little portions, as they do cause wind as I am sure you know!

Don’t:

Eat lots of ready meals or processed foods

Eat lots of baked goods like white breads, pastas, cakes and bisuits as these have little or no fibre content and are a sure fire way to block you up.

The reason you are more prone to constipation is that there is an increase in the levels of progesterone produced by the body. This in turn loosens the smooth muscle in preparation for the birth and includes making your gut slow and lazy. Then, because the increased progestrone also relaxes your blood vessels, you are more prone to haemorroids as the weight of your growing baby increases culminating in the pushing to give birth.

So in a nutshell while it can be difficult to avoid both of these things, you certainly can make simple changes to your diet that will benefit both you and your baby.

Sound Therapy for Babies

Melissa Nathans recommends sound theapy for babies. For more information, check out http://www.sleepwellbaby.com where you can purchase sound machines, sound conditioners and other sleep and relaxation aids.

How To Make Your Au Pair Feel At Home

Choosing an au pair is a big decision for a family, introducing your au pair into a family routine can be tricky and a bit awkward at first. With a few tips however you can make the transition a lot easier for both the au pair and the family. This article will look at a few pointers to help you make your new family member feel welcome and help toward a happy working relationship.

The first helpful tip is to talk to your children about the situation that is about to happen, statistically you are far more likely to have younger children when hiring live in help. If these children are over the age of two it can be very beneficial to talk to them before your care arrives. Children do have the tendency to be difficult about change in their routine so it will be beneficial to warn them first about what will be happening and what they need to expect.

Next it is well worth looking and obtaining auto insurance, as your au pair will most likely to be using the car to pick up your children from school or nursery, going to the shops for food shopping and taking them to different activities. It will be important to officially add the au pair to your insurance so that you have complete piece of mind regarding travel. This is often an aspect to the process that some families overlook until they really need it, so keeping organized and on top of issues like this really helps.

Most au pair agencies require that you provide the nanny with their own private room to stay in, before they arrive it is a nice to gesture to make sure that everything is provided. This will make the nanny feel welcomed and settled when coming to live with you. Make sure that the room has a clean bed with places to store her clothes and belongings. Any extra comfort items you can provide such as alarm clocks, mirrors and towels will be much appreciated and help them feel homely.

Lastly, It is well worth bearing in mind that your au pair may be learning a second language when they come to stay with you. Once you have chosen yours and know the native language of your nanny then learning a few words and important phrases from their language is well worth doing. Your carer will appreciate the effort and it will help translate important messages and make her feel comfortable. With these small tips it will help the transition much easier, families that host an au pair often find it was the best decision they made for both their children and the health of the family.

Help Your Children Unleash Their Potential and Develop Balance

As someone who has family members working in elementary school systems in various parts of the country, I can see the increasing reported cases of ADHD and more severe behavioral problems cropping up in young children of varying ages, economic classes, races, and ethnic groups.

My own mother told me of a second-grader at her school that threw a tantrum so severe that it took four adults to restrain him to keep him from hurting himself or others.

Now, I will be the first to emphasize the fact that I am not a professional. Certainly some of these children have very serious problems that need to be addressed by psychiatrists and doctors and perhaps even prescribed medication to help keep some issues under control. But in my personal opinion, children need more opportunities to unleash both creative and physical energy.

Tight government budgets have spelled out the doom of many fundamental school programs. Music, physical education, art, and elementary gifted programs in public schools have begun to suffer or have disappeared altogether from some schools.

While it is definitely worthwhile petitioning and contributing to keep all of these programs in place, it is also important that you step up to the plate with your own child to ensure that they have an intellectually enriching and physically motivating environment at home.

We all know how difficult this can be because unfortunately, we all have demands on our time beyond our children and families. But you can still do your part by both encouraging and providing.

By providing, I mean make the arts accessible in your home. Supply paints, crayons, coloring books and drawing paper. Select age-appropriate music and play it for your children. Sing along with them to the radio on the way to school. And, as your children grow older, introduce them to new music that will interest them in new ways.

Often, depending on peer groups and other types of exposure to dictate your child’s taste in music and the arts will instill in your children questionable values that you may strive to undo later. It will be better to take the time to establish your standards early on.

Encourage each of your children to unleash the power of their imagination as a response to the various arts they enjoy. This will help them develop a lifelong appreciation of and connection to the arts.

Your children should also have a love for good, clean fun. Think about enrolling them in club sports. If this is out of your budget, then collaborate with neighborhood parents to arrange play dates that include physical activities, even if there are just a few games of tag.

Regular cardiovascular exercise not only helps fend off childhood obesity; it promotes positive brain activity and helps children focus in the classroom. Do your part to petition for regular recesses at your child’s school, and then take time to encourage your children to use the time to play available sports or other physical games with their friends.

Children who develop and maintain a balance of solid academics, artistic pursuits, and physical activity are more likely to become balanced adults. But what is most important is the parental involvement and encouragement!

The Joy and Frustration of Toddlers

Sarah is a lovely little stubborn toddler. At a very young age she knows what she wants and most importantly, what she does not want. From a very young age she started to assert her authority on the family. Language has not been a barrier for Sarah. She has been able to communicate very well with only limited speech. She is not slow to develop her language skills, but no, up, this and that seem to be the only words she needs to communicate.

Non-verbally she communicates very well. Screwing up her face when she does not like something, giving a huge grin when you give her what she wants. Screaming and yelling, laying on the floor when she does not get want she wants. This is all very consistent behaviour for a one and a half year old and it is actually marking a new stage in her development.

Sarah has tantrums a lot earlier than her sister Charlotte who is now 6. Charlotte really did not have too many tantrums, Sarah on the other hand is the Queen of them and has been since she was one.

I know many parents who love the toddler stage, but are also frustrated with the behaviour associated with it. Fights, yelling, tantrums, lying on the floor, sometimes even banging their heads! It can be joyous, yet frustrating during this stage of development.

Funnily enough, I am not too worried about this stage because I have learnt the secret to dealing with toddlers. I can feel confident that I can assist my child by still letting her develop and go through the normal toddler stage, but also influence her behaviour in a positive way and achieve peace in the household.

There is help out there to learn the skills you need to effectively deal with your toddler. There is a wonderful audio program, which can guide you through this stage, step by step. Not only will you learn how to deal with toddlers, but it will also help you understand communication and the positive ways you can get what you want out of a situation. The skills can even be used with older children and even applied to work situations.

It is mind blowing that what you say and the choice of the words you use can have such an impact on peoples behaviour. I certainly did not know the psychological power of the words and structure of a sentence until I took steps to understand my child better. Amazingly enough, the way you talk to your toddler, can have a huge impact on their behaviour, you just need to know the secret of how to do it.

Don’t remain frustrated with this stage of your childs development. There is assistance out there and it is always a positive step to increase your parenting skills and the resources you have to turn to.

Your Baby Can Benefit From Organic Products

Smart shoppers search out organic foods in order to provide their families with the absolute best possible food available. However, organics goes beyond the food we eat. Organic products can be found in nearly every sector of manufacturing, often in places we would never think to look even baby items.

Many new parents are particular about the newest addition to their families, especially if it is their first child. They can go to the nearest discount store and purchase items, but they may want something more natural for their little one. If that is the case, there are numerous manufacturers that are producing baby and toddler items that meet this desire for things more natural.

Diapers: Everyone knows that one of the major items you will use with a new baby is diapers. You have several options: disposable diapers that cause landfill problems, cloth diapers that you can purchase at a local store or have delivered to your home, or organic cloth diapers. If you are a natural parent, organic cloth diapers will most likely meet your needs.

The Organic Cotton Baby Love Fitted Diaper is a true one-size-fits-all reusable cloth diaper. The diaper fits babies from 8 pounds to 35 pounds. The fabric folds down in the back of the diaper in order for a newborn to wear it and it will adjust in size as the baby grows. It features Velcro closures that are pinless, ten layers of 100% organic cotton flannelette fabric for maximum absorbency. The inner panel is removable in order for the diapers to take less time drying, and you can purchase extra padding for overnight.

The 100% unbleached organic cotton fabric allows air to circulate better than fleece lined diapers and will help your baby avoid diaper rash problem. There are no synthetic fabrics to irritate your babys skin. They come in natural, light beige only.

You will probably be able to find other manufacturers of organic diapers if you search online. Prices on organic diapers vary greatly, depending upon the design and manufacturer of the diaper, but prices start around $4 per diaper and increase from that point.

Baby wipes: If you use diapers, you will need baby wipes eventually. You can purchase reusable, 100% organic cotton flannelette baby wipes, as well.

Teethers and toys: Organic teething toys can also be purchased. Green Lion Eco Toys has developed all-natural teethers and toys that do not have the harmful chemicals found in many plastic toys. These toys are perfect for those babies that need to chew but have concerned parents. Made from 100% organic cotton, these teethers and toys are washable and can be easily tied to a car seat or stroller so they will not be easily lost.

Baby carriers: Quite often mothers that use organic products also prefer to wear their babies instead of carrying them. Luckily there are many baby carrying products made from organic materials. One such product is the Karma Baby organic Harmony pouch. This product is made from organic hemp. It is a light weight sling that features leg padding and has just the right amount of stretch in the fabric. A toy ring is also included on this natural sling. It comes in a variety of sizes to fit any mother, but men can use them as well. Prices range from around $85 to over $100 depending upon the type that you purchase. You may also purchase organic cotton slings beginning around $60 and up.

Clothing: It is quickly becoming more important for parents preferring natural fabrics to be able to find 100% organic clothing. Conducting an online search will provide you with nearly 4 million hits. If you can not find what you are looking for in that many options, the item probably has not been made yet.

Baby bedding: If you are going to put organic diapers and clothing on your child, of course you will want to use organic bedding, as well. There are numerous manufacturers of 100% organic bedding with everything from sheets to pillows to comforters. In fact, you can even find a natural crib mattress to give your child a better start.

Natural crib mattresses are becoming popular among parents of newborns. Not only are they free of toxic chemicals used for pest control as the fibers grow, they are free of the dyes and solutions used in manufacturing. While all-natural crib mattresses are not easy to find locally, you can purchase them online and have them shipped to your front door. Just make sure that if this is important to you, you purchase the mattress early.

Your baby can benefit from organic materials all you need to do is use the tips above to keep your baby healthy.

Cloth Diapers - The Safe Alternative

In this day and age, resources are starting to be very expensive. People are looking for ways to save money and eliminating bills that are not needed is a very good way. Have you ever thought about saving money and going to the modern cloth diapers? Would you believe it if we told you that you could save over a thousand dollars by turning to diapers of cloth? On average, the general public will spend two thousand dollars and those popular disposable diapers for one child. If you turn to the cloth, then it would only be about seven hundred dollars and that includes having them washed. When it comes to the cloth, you should look at the many different advantages. As we continue this article, we are going to tell you just how much you will be benefiting from these diapers.

Apart from saving money, when you use these type of diapers, you will be reducing diaper rash on the baby. In fact, it is rare to find rash caused by a diaper when they are made out of cloth. Why? Simply because the cloth is breathable and generally, they are changed more often, because after three to four hours, the diaper begins to feel wet. The ones that are disposable hold that wetness in and the parent does not realize how long the child has been wearing the poopy or wet diaper. Disposable ones are hotter, allows bacteria to rapidly grow, which causes rash. If your baby has skin that is sensitive, then he or she may have a reaction to the disposable diapers.

Did we mention that cloth is easy to use? The new ones out there today have a unique faster that makes them just as easy to use as the disposable ones.

They are also very comfortable as they are chemical free and made out of natural fibers. Most of them are made out of cotton, but sometimes, hemp may be used. With the fabric diapers, the baby will be staying cool, even on those days when it is hot.

Would you believe it if we told you potty training will be easier? Generally, children who wear cloth diapers tend to potty train six months earlier than those that wear the ones that are disposable. The cloth does not hide that wet sensation.

Many parents turn to the fabric bottoms simply because they do not like to put the disposable type on them. Why? Because they believe the disposable bottoms contain harmful chemicals that are no good for the baby. We must say that they made a good choice as the disposable bottoms are no good. Just how hazardous are those disposable bottoms?

They could be the cause of the increase in male infertility. Why? Because they heat up the testicles to a degree that causes them to stop developing normally. Do you know those gel balls you see on the babies skin when you change him or her? That is sodium polyacrylate, which can no longer be used in tampons as it is linked with Toxic Shock Syndrome. Employees who work around sodium polyacrylate are known as having fatigue, weight loss, female organ problems and slow healing.

With all that said, what do you think about cloth diapers? Personally, we think they are the safe alternative that has been around for years.

Looking for Cloth Diapers at great prices and lightning fast shipping? Diapers Etc. carries full lines of Diapers Cloth from all makers at unbelievable prices.
