This era is what we call internet age. It is really amazing how to use this thing we call internet. You can search anything and everything here and also we can talk to people who are not on same time zones. Isn’t it really awesome?
I was born on the age computer, but it is only used by military. I only see it in the movies and it is not yet available anywhere. It was introduced to me only in the year 1989 when I was in college. I didn’t have the knowledge on how to use it maybe it’s because you need to have proper instruction before you can fully comprehend and apply that knowledge in using the computer. Unlike nowadays, computers are all over the place, you can even have it at home and ISP is already available too. And what I observe is how children or young people use it. We parents are not aware how our children are being exposed on the internet. Even most of the time children are more capable of using it than we are.
In my experience, I never expected my son to easily understand how to use the internet. He even had accounts on different sites such as Friendster, Skype, Facebook, etc. One time, I was browsing on our computer and was shocked at what I found out from his temporary files. I found out that my fifteen year old son was surfing on porn sites.
I consulted my husband regarding my discovery and he told me that it was just okay. He added that it was but normal for kids at his age to be curious on different matters like sex. However, I wasn’t fully relieved on that. For me, my son was still young to be exposed on such stuff. But eventually I got over it but my worry stayed on since I still had a five year old son and a ten year old daughter whom I do not want to be exposed on these forbidden sites. So I searched for different ways on how to protect them from such and here are a few tips I gathered from my research:
1. Subscribe to an internet blocker.
2. Install passwords so the children cannot surf without permission. Also, you need to check on the sites they visit.
3. Limit computer access. Putting the computer in the living room or in a common family area would certainly help.
4. Proper guidance and advice from parents.
