For many first-time mothers the idea of childbirth and labor is a terrifying prospect. While already-been-there mothers say that once the baby is in your arms the memory of the pain goes away, this does nothing to calm an expectant mother’s fears. The best thing she can do is take power into her own hands by learning all that she can.
The average pregnancy lasts 38-42 weeks and most often classes are only available during the last trimester to teach a mother what to expect and how to labor when it comes. Before the last trimester though, a mother has many options available to her to learn about the process. Finding a bookstore or a local library is often the best start for learning about childbirth. There are countless options available to the mother when it comes to childbirth and a good book is the best way to learn about all of them. While the physician knows what is best, and there is always the chance of extenuating circumstances than can limit a mother’s choices of birthing plans, there is nothing better than knowing the options and making informed decisions.
Doing research on the internet is another great place to find a plethora of information regarding childbirth and pregnancy. While the websites are numerous, taking time to wade through the information will be well worth the knowledge gained. Hiring a doula is another option available. The doula is a well of information and has a lot of experience with childbirth and offers a great support system and knowledge base to support the expectant mommy.
It’s important to now that giving birth in the hospital isn’t the only option available. Many women prefer to give birth at home with a medical professional or midwife available; water births are also becoming a popular choice. Childbirth does not have to be only in a hospital, many women find a home birth much more meaningful and spiritual for both mom and baby.
When the last trimester does arrive it’s important to find a good Lamaze class to attend. This is often the best place to gain control and squelch the fear out of labor. Here expectant mothers can exchange ideas and knowledge and a mother can learn how to make childbirth go as smoothly as possible for her. A physician can help you get in touch with classes available in the area.
